Yeah it's a sport where small men called jockeys sit on horses and race them.

challenge the horse to a 100 yard race but make the track 50 yards long by the time the horse slows down and turns around you've won

Your question is what exactly?
If you want to know how it all started, about 350 years ago a lot of rich people, including the Royal Family, would sit around and say "I bet my horse is faster than yours", then they would race against each other to prove it.
Over the years the fastest horses were bred to one and another to produce the Thoroughbred breed as we know it today. All modern day thoroughbreds can trace their bloodlines back to one of 3 arab stallions (the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerly Turk) and about 35 British mares.
If you need more information, please be more specific in your question.

If you couldn't bet on it, it would die a quick death. God, is it boring.
