That's a really good idea.
If he likes music, record tokens are always useful. I used to think they were lazy, but actually, they are two presents in one: you get to open the gift, then you get to go shopping and have the pleasure of choosing what you want.
If he likes gadgets, have you thought of a Leatherman tool, or a
Swiss army knife? Or maybe a wine bottle kit (opener & cap cutter). A digital camera could be a good choice, depending on budget, or if he has one, how about a carry case for one? Or a picture storage device - like a card reader, but it stores the pictures, leaving the memory card free for use.

Heres one, Stanley do a 3 leg torch that opens like a tripod, the head swivels so you can stand it up and work hands free.
It has 6 leds and works of 3,6 or 9 batteries.
If he likes gadgets he'll love it.
Its called the maxlife 369.
Try B & Q, its about 12 to 15 quid.

Dad likes gadgets and music too but he likes to build puzzles some. I buy a few thousand piece puzzles. He enjoys Thomas Kinkade the most.
He and mom like playing the Nancy Drew pc games together.

I always give my Dad a litre of whisky (usually Teachers as thats his favourite) and if I stopped he would be upset.
I am upfront with my family and don't have time to look around for everyone and want to buy presents people will like and keep so I normally ask him what he would like and get that & then add something else like a cd and DVD or vouchers for them. Maybe some aftershave, slippers and socks or a book.

Hi Fairy cakes
My dad has loved the following presents:
1) a collage family photo made up of pictures taken by me and other family members then mounted in a frame - I bought an old picture with a nice frame and glass front from a charity shop and took out the old picture and used it. He appreciated something made specially and its had pride of place in his favourite sitting area.
2) a mini Swiss army knife that fits on to his keyring - has scissors, screw drivers , nail file, tooth pick, tweezers, bottle opener and knife and it measures just 2 and 1/2 inches long and it has stayed in good condition despite regular use for years.
Good luck Teddy

I made my dad a CD the other day, of all the old songs he used to like, I asked my mum and sister for ideas of songs. He absolutely loved it, and it cost me nothing to make it. He loved the idea that I'd made something and thought about it and he listens to it all the time.

Rolling stones tickets or tickets to whatever bad he was into when young... ideally for mum too with instructions that they act like the teenage couples they were.
Electric guitar...
Whats he always wanted to do? ie scuba dive with a shark or skydive...
Maybe join forces with others
