The IEEE 1394 multimedia connection enables simple, low-cost, high-bandwidth isochronous (real-time) data interfacing between computers, peripherals, and consumer electronics products such as camcorders, VCRs, printers, PCs, TVs, and digital cameras. With IEEE 1394-compatible products and systems, users can transfer video or still images from a camera or camcorder to a printer, PC, or television, with no image degradation..

Applications that benefit from IEEE 1394 include nonlinear (digital) video presentation and editing, desktop and commercial publishing, document imaging, home multimedia, and personal computing. The low overhead, high data rates of 1394, the ability to mix real-time and asynchronous data on a single connection, and the ability to mix low speed and high speed devices on the same network provides a truly universal connection for almost any consumer, computer, or peripheral application.

To capture video from an analog signal such as S-Video, you need a device that will do that such as Pinnacle Systems Movie Box. The Movie Box concects to your computer via USB-2 and translates any signal even IEEE-1394 for you. In addition it comes with Pinnacle Studio 10.5 which is about 10x better than Windows Movie Maker for editing. It's $99. There are similar products from other manufacturers such as Win-TV from Happauge. If your camera has Firewire but your computer does not, you can get a Laptop PC-Card for IEEE-1394 for as low as $15. IEEE 1394 is also known by Apple Computer's name of FireWire and Sony's name of iLink. It is a high-speed data connection for computers that can work at speeds up to 800 Mbps. You can think of it as a cousin to USB and -- from the user's standpoint -- it works much the same way. There are three or four different types of FireWire connectors, including a really tiny one and one that looks like a USB connector that is pointed at one end. FireWire is most commonly used to feed video from a camcorder into a computer, but it is also used for external hard drives.

I can't say for sure if your computer has a FireWire connection. Go to the manufacturer's Web site and see if the specs for your model refers to an IEEE 1394 connector.

FireWire (also known as i.Link or IEEE 1394) is a personal computer (and digital audio/digital video) serial bus interface standard, offering high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services.

If your laptop has firewire, it would have a connector similar to the following diagram:

Just as any other peripherals, you will need cable (i.e. Firewire or 1394 cable) with matching connector use the device.

It is another name for Firewire. Firewire interfaces are included in Apple Macintoshes since 2001 or so. With such an interface you can download a film from a digital video camera to you computer. Hard disk drives also often have such interfaces, which are faster than plain USB 1.

Its a firewire connection. there are two main type a 6 pin connection and a 4 pin connection. It'll probably be the 4 pin you have. It is used for connecting video cameras - the firewire connection provides faster speeds than usb2.0.

Its a Firewire port. The type of cable is called DV or firewire cable. It is used for all types of digital camaras or camcorders. Is it at the back of your laptop? maybe, it looks kind of like a big USB port.

IEEE1934 is a Data transfer PORT available default on many Laptops, this is very similar to USB Port but Much more Faster ,
Physically the size is 1/4 of the USB Port making it much more versatible. Many today's camcorder have IEEE1394 Port for faster connectivity. Faster than USB 2.0
