Why do people think 16-18 year olds are innocent and easily manipulated?

Why do people say 16-18 year olds especailly girls are these weak innocent vunerable people why somehow are stupid easily manipulated or controlled?

Look at the 60s onwards... who do you think were leading the anti segregation protests and battles, the pro gay rights, the underground anti war organisations, the equal rights for women and ant criminjustice bills that attacked ravers and alternative cultures..

Often putting themselves in danger and fighting back?

Most of the 16 -18 year old girls I've known since that age, were all very sexually active, rarely without boy friend or snogging guys, bboning guys in nightclub or party toilets...

Note that may include long term boyfriends of years or more not just those they pulled.

Several moved out of home successfully flat sharing from 16. Lots of parties being active members of music subculture /gig /festival or underground rave party scenes and involved in the politics

Risking life and limb doing high level skateboard, snowboard stunts, surfing killer waves...

Being at the peak of their lifes fitness.

When most flexible, creative, political, hormonal and sexually active in most cases.

Many of the girls I remember were quite capable of fighting and took no crap from guys...

Most were way ahead in terms of sexual and life experience and independance to guys many years their age...

VERY strong willed and seeing th through bulshit a mile away.

Manipulating the guys around their fingers.

I absolute full awareness and contol of their sexaulity... Using it like a highly tuned women to get out of trouble, get people on their side, get into nightclubs past bouncers sweet talking in seconds etc

I was saying it was the girls doing the conquesting, boasting of what they had done and how much.

At 16-18, you are just starting out in life. You may have some sexual experience, and political ideals but that isn't everything. Looking back, there are things that I would do differently if I was in certain situations now, because I am more aware (although I was considered mature by friends and adults I knew then). That goes for my twenties, and my thirties as well. No doubt, I'll get to fifty and review my forties in the same way. Life experience, and the wisdom that comes from it are things that, in your teenage years, you cannot have to the same degree. It's all a learning process.

I totally agree that some (many) of that age are confident, capable women who achieve all manner of things. However, I also think there has been a shift in the way children are brought up which unfortunately has meant many of them being molly-coddled, taken everywhere, everything done for them, so that by the time they get into their teens many are unable to take decisions, accept responsibility or do many normal adult activities on their own. Just as an example of this, my friend's 18-yr-old step-daughter recently decided she wanted to go on holiday with her bf. Did she organise the holiday? Did the bf? Did they hell - Dad had to organise every last thing, right down to booking the hotel for them. My friend couldn't believe it. When we were 18, if we told our parents we wanted to go on holiday, their response would have been 'that's nice, dear, don't forget to send us a postcard!' It wouldn't have occurred to them - or us - to help. We managed just fine, but the fact that some teens now don't seem able to do things for themselves is what leads to the perceptions you speak of.

Because once you are 25 - 35 - 45 you will see that you WERE oh so innocent and vulnerable at that age. You see life as endless, your ideals as everyone elses and cannot comprehend why anyone would want to manipulate you? Do you really think all that sex was because it made the girls feel good??? You are quite correct in you descriptions. At the same time, all your evidence is anecdotal. There is evidence that human brains on average don't fully develop until the 20's. And, for every anecdote you cite, there are as many or more, of young people who are dysfunctional, using drugs and alcohol, abused and abusing, and believing the world owes them whatever it is they desire.
BTW, there were teenagers in the civil rights movements but very few were "leading," You've got a distance to go to make the case that you seem to want to make that teenagers as a group are not innocent and easily manipulated.

Times have changed, although there are still some teenagers who are vulnerable. I personally don't think the majority of them are innocent, in fact children a lot younger than that are old before their time. I guess people say that because in the eyes of the law, up to the age of 18, they are minors.

I think it's because they are still learning about the world...curiousity is a human nature. After 18, they see what the world is really like, and that the same things occur over and over. 16 to 18 year olds are still in the midst of growing up and learning.
