I grew up in a household where if my mother spoke Spanish my father would condemn her, in turn I never learned. Now that I'm older, I feel incomplete having family members I can't even talk to due to my language barrier. Classes are a bit "rinky dink", and I wanted to know if anyone out there had a similar experience and can tell what they did to pick up a second language when your surrounded by English. I imagine it's more difficult the older I get to pick up the language. Thanks a lot in advance for yout time guys! - Teleflurry.

It could be more difficult if you are older, right. But.. see it this way. You now know grammar rules.. and an think of how the language works, instead of only repeating. The phonology won't come as natural, though.
You don't want classes. That means you'll need to get use to the sounds of in some other way. Maybe listening to radio or watching TV and movies.
I would suggest going to http://www.phrasebase.com . It is a community for people wishing to learn languages. The Spanish forum has many things to learn. you can help there, ask questions about grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc.

It is never too late to learn. Immerse yourself in the language. Listen to Spanish music, Spanish TV and have your Spanish speaking friends use it around you.

Sign up for a course in your nearest community center or school

Good luck.
