There is probably a vet tech on duty and a vet on call that can be there within minutes. It's all about convenience for you.

Don't they have a vet on call number? My vet office will see pets anytime 24 hours a day, but they do have regular office hours. I can call their # and on the recording it will give me the home # of the vet on call for that night. I call him and he meets me at the office and sees my cat.

Smaller towns usually don't have an office that is open all night or on weekends. You call the number and it is sent to a vet's pager and they can meet you at the office if your pet needs treated right away. That's how ours works.

Even if there's no vet on duty, one is probably on call so he/she can come in if there is an emergency

So they can charge you more while you wait for them to call and wake up a vet. Then they can charge you after hour rates.
