I don't know whether it is the 'best' camcorder on the market, but it does one heck of a job and has the 16:9 (wide screen) format.
I bought it recently through eBay. It's a Canon ZR300 which uses mini DV tapes. The output is in .avi files, which takes 12 to 13GB per hour of video (high resolution). It also has a built in 1.3MP picture taking capacity with a flash memory card.
In addition it allows transferring analog video from any source and converts it into a digital video, which then can be transferred to a computer for further processing and turning into a DVD.
The list price on it is $499. I bought mine for $211. including some $150. worth of peripherals (bag, tripod, flash memory)

DVD Camcorders are the best buy as they are simple to use. You don't waist time transferring them to PC, DVD or Video like DV tape Cams. All you do is record from cam and put the DVD straight into a DVD player to view your footage or put straight into PC and manage data with ease. I have a Sony DVD camcorder and it is brill, if you are going to buy a DVD cam I recommend that you buy a Sony one cause they are one of the best manufacture you can buy.
