It's the size of the blade they use on the clippers. There are different sizes of blades. You must know that Oster and Wahl clippers have the same numbers but the lengths are different. So once you use a specific brand clipper make sure you ask if you switch stylists what they are using and make an adjustment. I believe Oster has a shorter length with their numbers than Wahl.
