God gave Noah & his family the rainbow to show that the earth was at peace again and He promised not to destroy it all by a great flood again. God was angry at mankind but when He saw them all drowning He felt sad that He had to do that. So He promised never to flood us again. I think of His promise everytime I see a rainbow. But I also believe that a rainbow forms because of the sunrays reflecting off the raindrops. I can make a rainbow with my garden hose. A rainbow comes while it is raining and the sun is shining at the same time but I like to think of God putting it out there every once in a while to remind us.

The Genesis account says God set up the rainbow (prism effect of light through raindrops) as a sign of a promise. The promise being that the entire Earth would never again be destroyed in a flood.
This is not a promise that small floods would never happen. Just that there would not be another one to cover the entire planet.
Personally, I like the metaphore with the interaction of light and water also. It's really cool

That's what He said isn't it? So, yes. Just because we know why a rainbow forms scientifically, doesn't mean God's promise doesn't exist.
One thing to remember is that until the flood, it never rained on the earth. God caused a mist to come up from the ground which was the source of water.
After the flood, rain was something new which also would frighten Noah when he saw it. So, God told him that just because you see rain again, doesn't mean I'm flooding the earth. He told Noah to look at the rainbow as the sign for that promise.

The rainbow is a sign that God will not flood the whole earth. That is separate from flooding certain parts 'only' of the earth. Some may believe the rainbow is basically a prism of light being refracted thru the water droplets; call it science and not God. The way I see it, science is the 'how' of how God did it.

There are many religious implications of rainbows. Greeks thought it was the road the goddes Iris used to descend from heaven. Norse mythology called it Bifrost and thought it led to Vahalla. Christians believe it is a promise from god. The rainbow is infact a refraction of light. If you go out in the early morning right after sunrise, look at a dewdrop and move your head horizontaly It will shift through every color in the spectrum. This is what is happening to the far-away raindrops, but the raindrops are moving, not your head, and It is happening to thousands at a time. The rainbow is the pattern that is produced.

Rainbows exist because of the way light interacts with water droplets in the air
They have nothing at all to do with god, who does not exist anyway.
As for never flooding the earth again ............ try telling the inhabitants of New Orleans that.
COMMENT FOR ORCHIDMG.
I didn't answer this in the religion forum, I answered it from the main list.
Also a rainbow is a product of light refraction from water droplets, not from some fake all knowing being deciding it's pretty so why is this question in Religion and not Science.

The rainbow was given as a promise from God or we can say a token from God that he will NEVER destroy the world again by a flood. You have to notice what the Bible actually says, God never did said that he would not allow a flood on some parts of the earth, But he said that he will never destroy mankind or this earth again with a flood, Many people gets that confussed, We can see floods all the time, but not a flood that will destroy this earth or all living thing again. Any so many people thinks that Noah had to go out & round up all living aninmals to come into the ark, NO, when it was time for them to go into the ark, they willing came to the ark, because God caused them to come to the ark. I don't see anywhere that God told Noah to go out into the wilderness to look for aninmals, But it does say bring them into the ark, which means they are already at the ark. If you go to Genesis 7: we can see something also that so many people have overlooked. We have heard the story that Noah took in 2 aninmals of every kind male & female, That is correct partly. Gen7:1-3 Of every unclean aninmals Noah was to bring in 2 of a kind, Male & female. But of every CLEAN aninmal Noah was to bring them in by 7's male & female, Why is this done? Because God knew after the flood that Noah was to offer up sacrifices to God. & it had to be an aninmal that was consider clean & if Noah only brought in 2 of the Clean aninmals, & he offer one up, then that breed could not re-populate the earth, That is why pairs of 7's was brought in. So even though we may see floods somewhere on this earth, that is not the promise God made to Noah, The promise that God made to Noah was that God would NEVER again destroy all living things from the face of the earth. That rainbow is the Promise.

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a nearly continuous spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere.

U are right, it alludes to the Genesis and Noé.
But in the Holy Bible, the rainbow is not only the promise made by God that He will never do that again, it is a symbole of revival.
In this biblical symbole, God binds the ground and the sky forever, Him and human beings.
