I've been woken up in the middler of the night by this howling and have wondered why they do it. When one starts, others get excited and bark or howl. Why do they do it. Will any kind person who is an authority on this subject please tell me why.

I once had an elderly lady for a friend. She had a wonderful little dog. A mix of some sort. She had the dog trained well and it behaved very well. Learn here https://tr.im/chP70

She kept an uncovered candy dish on her coffee table with candy in it. The dog was forbidden to eat the candy. When she was in the room observing the dog he did not even appear to notice the candy. One day while she was in her dinning room she happened to look in a mirror and could see her dog in the living room. He did not know he was being watched. For several minutes he was sitting in front of the candy bowl staring at the candy. Finally he reached in and took one. He placed it on the table and stared at it, he woofed at it. He stared some more, licked his chops and PUT IT BACK in the bowl and walked away. Did he want the candy, oh yeah. Did he eat it? Nope. They can be trained that well but most, I'll admit, are not trained that well. When I was a young boy, maybe 5 years old. We had a german shepherd. He was very well trained also. My mom could leave food unattended on the table, no problem. She would open the oven door and set a pan roast beef or roast chicken on the door to cool. No problem. He would not touch it, watched or not. But butter? Whole other story. You leave a stick of butter anywhere he could reach and it was gone. He was a large shepherd so there were not many places he could not reach. Really, I think the number of dogs trained to the point they will leave food alone when not being supervised is very small indeed.
.
Now if we are talking obedience training, not food grubbing, that is a different story. Way back when I was first learning obedience training one of the final exercises was to put our dogs in a down/stay and not only leave the room but leave the building for 15 minutes. The only person that stayed was our trainer, not the owners. Most of the dogs in my class did not break their stay, which would be an automatic fail. I'm happy to report my dog was one of the ones that passed.

Dogs will be dogs - bless them!

Dogs howl if they are hungry, lonely, in heat or because they have a natural wild instinct to do so. They don't mean any harm.

I don't believe that dogs howl if there's going to be a death. It's also said (in Sri Lanka) that when owls hoot there is going to be a death in the family. But does this mean every person who hears this 'one' owl in the neighbourhood will have a relative die?? Goodness, people will be dying like flies each time an owl hoots. It's all coincidence and wives tales.

Give the doggys a break, they're just hungry or lonesome!

You didn't say what breed of dogs, whether it's your dog or the neighbors dog... but anyway... alot of beagles howl at night, so do hounds and these dogs do howl a creepy sounding howl, but it is the hunter in them... also they could be howling an alarm of something going on outdoors that shouldn't be, maybe a rabbit ran across your lawn, or maybe the young man that lives next door is boinking his gf out in the wide open...or there could be a stranger walking around where they need not be etc. etc. etc. if it is keeping you awake that you aren't getting enough sleep... get some ear muffs or a cd that plays soothing nature sounds to get you to sleep... because dogs.. well they HOWL!!!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUM57

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Dogs howl to call on other dogs...this is something instinctual from their ancestors-wolves.

All domestic dogs have lineages that go back to wolves.

Wolves howl as a method to call on other wolves in their pack to come and join them for the night so they can all sleep together or to organize a hunt as a pack.

Dogs howl because they don't have phones.

Ever hear of "The Twilight Bark"? Ok, its just a cartoon, but hey... why not? My dog has the cutest little howl... and he only does it when my girls spin him up by "playing puppy" and howling themselves.

Their howling goes back many many years to when they were wild like wolves.

I'm not an expert, but I think they do it to scare the living shite out of you (mine did anyway.....he thought it was funny I think).
But I do think that when one does it and the rest follow suit, they are communicating with each other, something they don't normally do in the day.
Good luck.
