don't hope is a more imperative, objective statement of not hoping, so it's best used when talking to someone or when referring to a certain issue. It also implies an informal tone.

hope not is a passive way of saying it, and is best used at the end of sentence, as a reply, or in poetry with no stated issues after it in the sentence. Implies a formal tone.

Example 1: I don't hope for it. (correct, informal).
Example 2: I hope not for it. (correct, formal)

"hope not" is more poetic .............. "don't hope" is more directive........... depends on what your using it for .
