For passed away in-laws you perform Pindaudaka kriya, also know as Pinda dana .
It is process of offering Vishnu Prasada to the Souls of dead relatives..
This is important Ritual and help the passed away souls, if by any chance they have landed in Ghostly Bodies or in hellish planets..This Pinda-dana done for them releases then from such Sufferings...
In this age, According to Vaishnava Acharyas the best way in this Kaliyuga is to chant Maha mantra
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare,
Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare ..
This mantra can be chanted in multiples of 108 times.. and the result given to them in prayer to lord Krishna...
This is the best Yagna of Pinda to be performed..
Rameshwaram being a Dham, it is best to chant there.

Their are alot of Gurukals available around Rameswaram temple for doing the rituals for ur elders.
They will guide u regarding it.
