I didn't even notice the gold in Bangkok. I have bought lots in Dubai though. The prices are pretty good. I know people who order from Syria too because the quality and price are good.

Gold is gold. It is a commodity that is uniformly priced throught the world. You cannot buy gold anywhere under the spot price.
If you want gold that you wear, bracelets, necklaces or rings then it is very reasonable to buy in Thailand. You can sell it back the same day for more than 90% of what you paid.
There are gold shops everywhere in Bangkok. They all display the buy and sell price in the window. These prices change daily, or even more often, reflectly the current spot gold prices. The spread between buy and sell is quite reasonable so you are paying very little for the manufacturing. Check several stores before buying.
Thai gold is 23 carat or 96.5% pure so is rather soft.
It is bought and sold in units of baht which is 15.2g of gold.
A troy ounce of gold is 31.1g or slightly more than 2 baht.
Buying in the US or Europe you get ripped off bad. Just trying selling jewelry back to a US shop.
Also be aware that Thai gold is offered for sale on many internet sites. It may be cheaper than buying in a jewelry store but it is much cheaper to buy yourself in Thailand.

There are different types of gold on sale, with different purity level. And the price if you work it against the gold price,, is about there. So it is not very much cheaper.
Dubai is the best place to get gold at low price, duty free.
If you want to buy, head for Chinatown in Bangkok. There are many goldsmith shops to browse. They close in the evenings, so you need to be there before that.

Don't get scammed by the emerald guys who convince you that you can resell the stones they sell at a big profit. The phone # of a New York jewel dealer they give you to confirm their story is their cousin in a phone booth.

DO NOT BUY GOLD IN THAILAND. Buy it from a federal mint in the EU or the USA or Japan. Don't even try to buy gold when the purity isn't 100% guaranteed.
