This is a trick I learned back when I was working at a sandwhich shop where we had to cut massive amounts of onions.
Let the onion sit in ice water (with plenty of ICE) for ~15min. Use a sharp knife to cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don't put it down the disposal!). This piece contains most concentrated sulfuric compound that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you're chopping it up. Once you've gotten that piece out, Let it chill in the ice bath for 10 more min and chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

Pre cut the peeled onion along the length of it, so when looking at it from the front it forms a # pattern, make sure you do not cut through.
Then cut the onion from the side- this is the easiest time to make sure to make the bits small enough- it can be hard in the first stage, but you don't need to worry about it overmuch.
This will ensure you don't cry at all.

Put the onion in water and make sure you dont cut all the way through the onion because you will cut through the seed where all the juice comes from which causes crying lol,

Most techniques usually require you to stand there dribbling over your food. not good in the kitchen.
the thing is, there is nothing wrong with having a good cry in the kitchen, and it's a test to see how determined you are to cook good food. every great meal involves onions as far as i am concerned. Keep cooking (save the world from heading to fast food planet) and keep crying.
Jamie oliver always likes to cry with onions! he said so in his first ever naked chef episode...
Oh, but if it is getting too much, red onions are less potent and taste better anyway. don't cut the root off straight away. that's where all the concentrated fumes escape, apparently.

Extreme measure - swimming googles!
Other than that, breathing through your mouth not your nose, whilst standing slightly back from the chopping board helps.
Use a decent (sharp) knife so it doesn't take longer than necessary. I like serrated knives to dice onions so it doesn't slip.
You can also get very nice dicing and shredding knives - curved with a handle at each end if you want to do it very quickly.

Open the window.
Personally, I like to cheat if I'm cooking and require diced onion - I put it in the food processor, or for a sauce, skin and quarter, par cook the onion to soften it then use my hand held blender.

The best way to do it is cut the onion in half, peel off the dry skin and then put it in a food processor, cuts it right up! If you don't have one of those handy, then you should leave cold water running and dip your hands under the water from time to time.

not many people know this but the core of the onion is actually the ripest part fo teh onion... this is what makes you cry...
They look like cloves of the root... they actual´ly are part of the root, and you will find them in the centre...
so, here's the trick.
Slice the onion in two... remove the long pieces in the middle that look like roots and throw away... you are now left with the round pieces of the onion that taste so nice!!!
Yummy!

I have a good remedy for that try this -
Take cold water and cut the onion into 2 parts and put it in that water for not less than 5Min's and then chop it without tears.
IT's true and quite helpful.
