I don't know why people respond to questions without reading all that is stated. First, Microsoft is advertising windows xp pro for $ 149.00 not $199.00. Second, if there is a way around it most people would not publish it for fear of being sued. And last but not least if microsoft is pushing Windows Vista so hard there has to be a fault in the XP/HOME system. If I were you I would download Vista beta and see if the cost for it is going to be reasonable.

Easy, do not let it download.
I blocked it from my updates, I have enough problems with most of Microsoft updates working ?not screwing up my box the way it is.
I am not running a pitch for Linux but I have it on half of my computers and I like it a bunch.
With all the applications that come with it I would say it comes in at a 1/10th the price of XP.

you should not download 'validation' updates. There is one software known as 'mublinder'...you can download and supress the pop ups about automatic updates. you can also visit MS websites where it explains to overcome this issue
