My niece is a hair stylist in America.
For boys of non-black, they rake the hair to one side and make it appear they did it with their fingers and the length will be just over the collar.
For girls of non-black, most want the thick pony tail or two pony tails, one over the other or a pony tail that is above hair that is brushed out.

It seems like most of the young girls in Texas are in to the long straight locks although my daughter who is a cosmetology student keeps her hair short and layered and changes the color about every couple of months.

Try side bangs, those look good on almost anyone, and I know with me anyway it really brings out my face.
