An anthame, or atheme is a knife used for ritual purposes. It is considered to be a symbol for masculinity, as a cup or bowl is considered the symbol for feminity. In use, the knife is used to trace shapes in the air, weave patterns, or touch objects or people. It is not meant to be used as a weapon or to draw blood of any sort. If it is used in such a way, it has been desecrated and must be destroyed. To pagans it is a symbol of life and power, not murder.

The anthame is a ritual knife with a double edged blade which may be engraved with various magickal symbols. The athame represents the elements of air. It is used by Witches to draw circles, to exorcise negative forces, to control and banish elemental spirits, and to store and direct energy during magickal rituals.

sorry i copy pasted.. but the object of the game is to learn something.

You received some good answers on this. I'd like to add that it may be also used to represent the element of fire since the blade was forged in fire. This is one of my favorite tools and seems to become a part of me during rituals. It is one of the very few tools that I am picky about who touches it. Mine isn't fancy but it is precious to me because of all of the times I've used it.

An athame' is a kind of spiritual counterpart to a real knife. More accurately, it is a real knife whose physical manipulation has a knife-like effect on spiritual/non-physical entities. An example would be to cut a line of non-physical energy connecting two entities. It need not be physically sharp, and in fact should probably not me used for physical cutting, as it is, unlike a normal cutting knife, typically consecrated for spiritual use.

Um... I do know it's a tool of air. I'm also more familiar with the spelling "athame". Without the N. But whatever floats your boat.

I just gotta ask, do you read the online comic "Oh My Gods"?

Wand, right. It is used for lots of things in rituals.

Pointing, drawing a circle(never windershins), stick it in a liquid to transfer a drop to something else, drawing symbols(in air or on a surface, ect.....

I think I cheated because I use to practice a Germanic faith. Atheist now though.

No idea at all. Even the word is foreign to the English language. Is it a brand name?
