I'm highlighting my best friend's hair in the next few days. I've done the home kits a lot before, and that part is no big deal. But she is extremely tender headed, and she just can't handle having her hair pulled through the cap. I don't really know how to do it with the foil though. Can anyone tell me exactly how, and anything else I need to know about it?

What do I do to make sure that I get down to her roots when highlighting, but make sure that it doesn't get on her other hair?

The technique or placement of the foil is the architecture of the highlight. This gives you the contrast and dimension of shape

Horizontal will always produce a highlight that goes from side to side/across.

Vertical will always produce a highlight that is chunkier and that caters to the depth/interior of the hair.

The more foil, the more highlights
The larger the space between foils the more pieced the look.
The more hair in each foil the heavier the contrast.
The less hair in each foil the more natural/subtler the look.
The amount of foil used, amount of hair in each foil and the space between them determines the look.

You may either slice or weave. It is your choice.

Bleeding is when the foil or meche slips or product is applied higher than the foil or meche, causing product stains on areas not intended for highlights. It is not a very becoming thing and is a sign of an unsuccessful highlight.

Causes of bleeding:

Foil slippage
Product overlap
Improper foil placement
Product oozing out of top or sides of foil
To prevent bleeding:

Neat clean sections and subsections
Make sure foil or meche is secured using proper folding
Make sure your slice or weave is not too far from the scalp
Do not apply product at very top of foil or meche, leave a minimal space
Fold your foil or meche slightly higher than your placement point

Tip: Don't make the color on the foils to thick.. Less is more and when doing the closest to the roots, tap it on. The foils will create heat, which will expand the bleach forward and make sure to use clean sections.

Foil Placement For Highlights

To start: Using a rat-tail comb, separate a thin layer of hair at the top of the head. Move horizontally. Fold a foil strip about five cm in and push it under the hair that has been separated. Take a toothbrush laden with bleach and cover the separated hair. Then cover with the foil strip, folding the strip carefully, not touching the color to any other strand of hair. The next row to be streaked should be about 1.25 cm below the previous streak and kept 1.25 cm apart. Repeat the procedure till the required amount of hair has been dealt with. After the hair wrapping is complete, the first wrap should be checked for colour. The colour should develop richly and if it is not so, re-apply bleach/color and leave for five minutes. As you open out the first few wraps, keep rinsing them with warm water to remove the bleach. When all the wraps have been opened out, shampoo hair and condition. And watch a myriad hues emerge...
