I fell on a steel bar, I got a bruise just above my ankle that hurts only when I put pressure on it in a specific way.

I know I should see a Doctor, I probably will but I wonder if this is so uncommon.

You sure can. My ankle slipped off of a fake platform our wood stove was on and it is shinny and slippery but I gave it no thought but when i was limping on it for over a month I went for x-rays and it was broke. They can do nothing for it if it is the foot or toes. It just has to heal itself, although it is not pleasant in the least while doing so.

Yes, you can. When my sister was a teenager she broke her ankle. When she got it X-rayed the doc told us that she had broken it over an old break that hadn't healed quite right. She, nor my parents, knew that she had broken it before that. So, it happens, I'd see a doctor. If you have broken it, you'll want it set so that it heals right. My sister broke her ankle the second time just by stepping off a curb wrong. The doctor said that because it wasn't set right and didn't heal correctly the first time, it was far more vulnerable and broke again when it probably wouldn't have had she gotten it taken care of correctly before. (Which she would had my parents known, lol).

It's not uncommon. If something's broken, it usually becomes very painful once that part cools down. Maybe you just got hit bad, but nothing's broken. An expert's opinion will do you no harm.
