What are the different ways to discourage imports from other countries?

High import tariffs. Enforced quantity limitations. Blockades. Negative advertising. Subsidies for local competitors.

yeah, like goFord said, there's already "imports" being built here on American soil, so there already at least 10 different offices/plants for Toyota alone, while the pure imports are more for JDM or luxury cars (VW has been being made in Mexico since the 70's). However, the brand we can do without is Kia; but we'll still need them to keep the slightly better cars in business LOL (just a pity they're not doing as bad as Renault).

why?
protectionism is bad for everyone.
bad for the consumer, higher prices and poorer product
limits corporate growth of the domestic, cause they dont learn to compete and work in a global market
bad for the public, les development in safety, environmental impact and reliability.
I would never buy a domestic made car, you can't buy a north american TV, cause they were useless so people went asian.

It's too late .... Most of them are allready here .. so there not importing ..... they're building them here
