It annoys me when anyone in the service industry acts that way, regardless of age. There are a lot of rude people out there, act like they are doing you a favor by answering your question or tending to your needs, when if it weren't for us, the paying customer, they wouldn't have a paycheck!
This is a huge pet peeve with me. I used to be shy, but I don't take crap from people anymore. When stuff like that happens, I ask for the manager. If I am not satisfied (or the manager acts the same way) I ask for the higher authority. If one is not on site, I will ask for (demand) the name and phone of district manager and phone of corp headquarters (or owner).
And I'm easy to please and put up with a lot, so it takes quite a bit for me to get to that point. Unfortunately, these days, customer service is gone, and we're getting used to crappy attitudes and service. Shame, really.

It annoys me incredibly. Especially since I'm the manager of a retail store. I would never put up with this behaviour from any of my staff.

I always make sure to be curteous to customers no matter how I'm feeling that day, or how irritating the person might be. I give my customers the same level of service I expect when I go into a store.

When I go shopping, I've gotten to the point that when I get asked if anyone help me, I say no, and your the first person who's spoken to me since I walked into the store.

Also, if their on the phone with their friends or anyone for that matter and can't multi-task by ringing through my sale at the same time (or put the phone on hold), I will look them straight in the eye, leave everything I picked up on the counter and say something along the lines of: "since you obviously don't have your priorities straight, here's what I'm not going to be purchasing today. Thanks!!"
And I leave the store. I know it's incredibly annoying having a counter full of product you need to return to the shelves.

I find it annoying when anyone does it!! It's just plain bad manners. I understand no one likes their job 101% of the time, there's always something else better to be doing, and places to be going.. but the fact is, while your employed in the retail industry the main focus of that sector is in sales which goes hand in hand with customer service... You can't sustain one without the other...

But lets not be too harsh though.. We all have shitty days and can be forgiven if we're a tad off kilter..

Did you know that if you have a bad customer service experience in a shop or over the phone etc, you'll tell on average, 7-10 people.. compare that to a good customer experience.. You'll tell on average, less than 5... A little useless trivia for you all! :o)

The people that work within retail are aware of these statistics and realise the importance of the "meet and greet" etc.. But we'd all do well to remember that these people deal with the public at large...and that isn't always a picnic... The public can be very demanding and also very rude when they're not getting exactly what they want. You can't blame someone for becoming stressed and acting out a little...

Lets spread the compassion folks!!

Yes it does. They are paid to assist customers and maybe need to be told so. I always comment on good service in a shop and will say so if it is particularly bad.
In the teenagers' defence, however, have you listened to the way that some of the customers speak to them? I have seen genuine attempts to engage a customer dismissed with incredible rudeness - and we wonder why they don't feel like sparkling. If it's someone who is about to serve me, I make sure I smile and tell them that the customer's rudeness is not their fault. It's amazing how that makes the young person feel and you can see the attitude become positive and the service excellent.
What's the song? "Spread a little happiness as you go by."
How about we as adult customers make it our business to give them a good day at work and see how things can change for the better?

Yes but it isn't just teenagers. Some shop assistants don't even smile or say thank you when they serve you. It costs nothing to be polite .You also get some very polite teenagers, I think it is more to do with the person than their age. I have seen some very rude older people . Manners should be for everyone.

It's not only annoying, it's extremely rude. Hey Missree, has it occurred to you that not everyone does all their shopping in a supermarket? A lot of elderly people can't make the trip to out-of-town stores and small neighbourhood shops don't usually have marked aisles etc, so may I suggest that you ensure your brain is fully engaged before operating your mouth.

I used to do that when i was 16 and working for dorothy perkins...especially at 5 minutes before closing time when i had just tidied the WHOLE shop and a I'm-not-going-to-buy-anything i-just-want-to-touch-everything-and-make-a-mess type of cutomer comes in. It's rude i know but you can't help but get irritated and give them murderous looks in the hope that they'll p*ss off so you can get away on time. Its even more annoying at closing time (10pm) when you know they've ALL piggin day to come in but no, they want to come in at 9.58pm!!!

Thankfully i've aged 6 years and now i'm that annoying customer!

i'm a save assistant in a e book position, and the single element that extremely annoys me about the shoppers is in the journey that they are impolite. It would not take a lot to be tremendous and well mannered, even with the undeniable fact that it does my head in and ruins my day even as someone who speaks to me in a impolite or patronizing way. there is extremely no desire for it in any respect. this is probably a similar element even as i'm paying for, i'm tremendous to all save assistants, as i understand it isn't ordinary operating with the final public, and that i'll't stand it even as the save assistant includes on their communique with their colleagues and thoroughly ignores me, or is purely ordinary impolite! back, there is not any desire. i'd surely sense undesirable if every person concept i'd been impolite or unhelpful ultimately to them. I also thoroughly believe 'What The Heck', (your first answer), shoppers sense the favor to talk all the way down to you, or as when you're scum, and picture that you realize each little thing, including expenses of each little thing! If something is going incorrect, or they're not pleased with even with, this is atomatically your fault!!!!

Not really , I realise that the days when Good Sevice -- with a Smile - are all but gone , "Ignorance and Bad Manners" seem to be "The Way"but I am sure many of the customers have only themselves to blame with their own rudeness and stupidity , perhaps it,s something to do with their Bloodyminded Attitude to the assistants whom they consider to be servants or scivvies.? ?

well if stupid people bothered to look what was around them more often than not all the aisles are clearly labelled and the product is often right in front of their eyes and they cannot see it. the most annoying thing is when customers only see what they want to see- special offers they refuse to even acknowledge the part where it clearly describes the offer details. So no it does not annoy me i think people should learn to use their eyes more.
