I'm visiting LA and San Diego end of the year for about 2 weeks. I thought I'll drop by in LA for a couple of days before heading to SD.. But I'll be staying at my friend's place there. I'll like to know the rough estimation cost of expenses in cali. food and transport wise.

Many places to eat with various prices. What type of food you like matters. I do not think food prices are really high. Traveling by bus is inexpensive and great and they go all over the city. Figure roughly say $i0.00 for a decent meal, not McDonald's please.
Breakfast are always around say$6.00.

We just came back from LA. We stayed in the Marriott and they had a Pizza Hut. We didn't eat there because we thought it was overpriced. The convention center had $7 hambergers and $3 Snapples. We loved Coco's. This restaurant was onlyl a block from the convention center and it had great breakfasts, pies, and ribs. My ham and eggs with potatoes and toast was $5. My husband had the ribs, chicken shrimp platter for $12. Disney and Universal tickets are expensive but maybe your friend knows some discount places. We caught a cab to go over a half mile to an Indian restaurant for $6 for the 5 of us. Gandhi's had good food and lots of it. We ordered several appetizers and it was about $20 per person.

You might look into renting a car if you feel comfortable driving there. We used the Disney shuttle to and from the airport.

There's a hostel in Santa Monica right on the beach (almost, next street over, it has views of beach). There are hostels in Hollywood, Venice beach, all very nice. http://www.hostels.com/en/findabed.php?ChosenCity=Los%20Angeles&ChosenCountry=USA

If you go downtown, you have to go to The Pantry! Huge breakfast for $3, steak of various types, I forget how much but UNDER $10!
