They'll send him to a mental institution, not jail. Although it is illegal to attempt suicide.

Except in the case of would-be suicide bombers and the like, people absolutely should NOT be punished for attempting suicide! Many of us go through bad times and not everyone can find effective ways to deal with it. He needs help and support, not negativity. It's also possible that he has some kind of chemical imbalance in his brain. The mix of chemicals our brain needs to function normally is so crucial that if it goes out of line the person really suffers and often doesn't know or even understand why.

It's absolutely ESSENTIAL to get him some expert, professional help to find out what the root cause is. Many would-be suicides can be helped, often with just simple treatment, but even if the cause runs very deep it's far better to get it dealt with now and don't let him go on suffering.

Regarding some of the other answers you've had, don't let it get to you! A person with a mental disturbance -- even temporary (which it may be) -- needs love and care and understanding. Reject thoughts of 'crazy houses' and the like and think 'professional care'.

The other important factor is that what he did impacts on you and all around him, so talk about it and maybe seek a little guidance. There are plenty of anonymous call-in places you can try if you prefer, but please please please.... Pick up the phone and call someone and get the process started so you can have him safe and well again.

No. He might be taken to a mental institution, though. However, should he decide to attempt to jump off a bridge and ties up the traffic to a jam, then he'd be jailed (if he fails to successfully kill himself) for public disturbance and additional suits from those who got tied up (if they sue for damages).

No, he won't go to jail, but he could be hospitalized in a psychiatric facility until everyone is reasonably sure that he won't try it again, or until his condition is stabilized through the use of anti-depressants or other medications.

yes attempted suicide is against the law, plus all the people involved with his rescue had to be there because of his selfishness.

They wouldn't put him in jail for that. But he does need counseling however.
