Assumptions:
Price = 98.9p per litre
1 US Gallon = 3.78541 litres
GBP £1 = USD $1.90 (today's mid-point rate)
0.989 x 3.78541 x 1.9 = $7.11 per US gallon
The question about hiring a car or using public transport depends on where you are going and what you are doing. Basically, use public transport in London (where it is good) and hire a car for everywhere else (where public transport is generally cr@p!).

You were doing well, except you missed the 8 out of $6.804 right at the end!

Just use the public transportation, London can be a pain to drive in due to the congestion.
May be look into getting a travel pass aimed for tourists?

Good question....Id like to know too. In Canada we are averaging a buck a litre or about $3.80 a gallon for the Americans. That includes the exchange rate.

I live in London and its a different cost depending on wherebouts in the country you are. It tends to be more costly in inner cities. Around me its getting close to £1 for a litre so allow me to do the maths, I need to brush up anyway.
1 US gallon = 3.78 litres
At £1 a Litre, US gallon = £3.78
£1 = around $1.8.. still with me?
3.78 x 1.8 = 6.04
The answer.. I hope, is around $6.04 for a US gallon of gas.
If I messed up somewhere, dont hesitate to mock me.
Yes most of this is tax, as with our cigarettes and alcohol. And most of our taxes go to people who smuggled their way over under a bus and somehow end up with larger houses than mine! Well.. I've said too much. Bye Bye!

As a guide, I pay 98.9p per litre here in the UK, which makes it £4.49 for a metric gallon. or £5.38 for an imperial. Which converted makes it about $10 per US gallon.
For my MG i use BP Ultimate, which costs £1.06 a liter ($10.90 US gal).
Bet that cheers up all the US people out there!

get a car , it is cheaper but london can be a nightmare to drive and their public transport is excellent, actually maybe better if you get a weekly pass for all london transport then you can go on the tubes trains and busses!

You get it per litre, but there are about 4 litres in a gallon and it is about 90p to GBP1 per litre, so about GBP4. You can convert that into USD

Gas (or petrol as it is called in UK) cost approx. 94-96 pence per liter.
1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liter
So one US gallon will cost £ 3.60 (approx. US $6.8)
