Well, for one thing, they leave an awful mess behind.

And, with the obsession in the US with cleaning up messes, using WMDs would be more trouble than they're worth. It will just have to content itself with the more conventional shooting and blowing up of the bad guys. Besides, shooting and blowing up are a whole lot more fun!

There are several categories of weapons of mass destruction. The main ones the United States has are various types of nuclear warheads.

These would be used only under the most extreme circumstances. We have not been in a declared war since August of 1945. We used the atomic bomb in Japan to end the war and avoid the land invasion of the Japanese homeland that all military analysts agree would have cost far more lives than were lost in the two atomic bombings.

We were prepared to use nuclear weapons either in direct defense of the U.S. during an attack or in retaliation throughout the Cold War, which lasted from approximately 1948 until 1992.

Fortunately the circumstances never arose in which we would use these terrible weapons. They ARE terrible weapons and we would not use them unless the circumstances justified it.

We do not have current chemical or biological weapons stockpiles as this country has decided they would not be used under any circumstances.

Except in extreme situations most governments including our own that possess WMDs keep them or have them more as a deterrent than a usable weapon. Employing them would bring not only international condemnnation(in most cases unless you were Israel) the amount of destruction they would cause would surpass thier tactical or strategic value. They are more a threat than a bona fide weapons system.

What do you mean if? Of course the US has WMD and we don't use them because so far we have had sane people in charge of our military and foreign policy. I'm not sure how much longer that will be.

There's no IF there. The U.S. definitely has the biggest arsenal of WMD's.

Why would they use them? One nuke could destroy an entire region of the planet. If you're thinking about the Middle East and the "War Against Terror" then it wouldn't make much sense to just blow countries right out of the map.

How many innocent lives would be lost that way? Not that they're not being lost now, but the numbers would increase tremendously.

using WMD isnt as easy as it looks America would need to answer for its use and there will be a lot of critcism from all around the world and there is a good chance someone will retaliate

We have them, but should only use them in a last final deterent of attacking the soil of the US directly. Anything else would almost immediately have the entire world declaring sanctions, war and any other weapon they could use against us.

Current US Defense policy uses these wonderful toys (read this sarcastically) as a deterrent to others who possess them. The threat of our using them prevents others from attacking us with them. Sort of a glorified "my dog's bigger than your dog", don't you think.

Besides, think of the worldwide uproar if we DID use them. Unlike other countries, and terrorist groups, we seem to give a damn what other peple think about us.

LOL at the response above about us caring what the worlkd thinks of us. WHY SHOULD WE? They don't think well of us anyway despite our efforts to do what is RIGHT, even for all countries.
