Who is judging you?

If you are illegal, that is a perfectly valid basis for differentiation. In this case you are a criminal. This is not a typical characteristic of the immigrants who founded the country.

On the other hand, if you came here legally, then people have no reason to look down on you on the basis of your immigration status..

No one is judging immigrants at all, its the illegal ones that are being considered when forming an opinion. The fact is, anything that is illegal can't be place in a favorable light, doesn't matter which way you would like to justified it, if it's illegal, it can't be right. Yes this country was established by immigrants and immigrants are still welcome, but to base something that was done in the past and laws have changed since then, can't be making illegal immigration right in the present. It's really not exactly you as a person, its your legal status in the country which is being judged.

Many of those who take a strong anti-immigration stance are actually racist bigots who use coded language to promote hatred against visible minority immigrants [immigrant is the code word for Mexican (or other "undesirable non-citizen")]. It's funny how strongly they condemn illegal immigration from Mexico, and yet conveniently forget about the tens of thousands of illegals from Asian and European countries. It's also ironic that many of those who speak out against immigrants (whether legal or illegal) depend so heavily on the labor provided by immigrants in agriculture, manufacturing and domestic service. You're right though - many of these people forget that their ancestors were once immigrants, too, and that their ancestors may have been the subject of discrimination as Irish or Polish immigrants (etc.) or black slaves decades or more ago.

No everyone in this country are immigrants. Some of those that are in this country are decended from the aboriginal people of this land that were here thousands of years before the arrival of Columbus. It is some of the teachings of those people that helped to establish what is known today as the democracy of the United States. It has been documented in history that the Founding Fathers sat in on a council meeting of the Five Nations Iroquois Confederacy and sought advice from the Iroquois Confederacy in the development of the system of government as it is known today. Do some historical research if you don't believe it.

I don't judge you for being an immigrant. What makes me mad is the people who come to this country illegally, and the Gov. for letting it occur, and the big companies for bring illegal immigrants over by the truck load. I don't think immigrants are bad people, I can't blame them for wanting to come to our country for a better life. I would be the same way if I lived in an underdeveloped country. I just think there needs to be changes before our country is taken over and is no longer the great country it is today!! Plus it's not fair that in order to get a better job I need to be bilingual. We should vote into law a national language!

I would not judge any immigrant who wanted to move to America. I believe this is the greatest place in the world. But, there is an immigration policy and I believe it has to be followed. Those who are here illegally make it much harder on those who try to come to America legally. In the end, all immigrants get punsihed which is not fair.

There is a long history in the US of hating the next ethnic group that arrives. They hated the Irish when they started arriving during the potato famine. They hated the Italians. They hated the Poles. The list goes on. Because Mexicans are the most visible now, they hate them. In a decade or so, when the Chinese or Indians become the next most visible immigrants, they will hate them too.

This country is the biggest melting pot in the world. Nobody who's got half a brain is judging you because you are an immigrant.

Will Rogers had it right - Never underestimate a person who has an accent. He can speak two languages - can you?

Are you a legal immigrant? If so welcome to the USA. Move next door and I'll walk over and welcome you.
Are you an Illegal immigrant? then get out! Pretty simple? I follow the laws in my country and I'll follow the law in whatever country I visit. I expect the same from everyone else.
