I researched it online and it looks scary. I have never been terrified of dentists but I am very, very nervous about this. I need to have it done on one tooth before I get my bridge done.

No sweat my dear. The material comes in a small bottle. The Dr. makes a small incision to make a flap. He pulls back the flapp to remove any unneeded gunk. How he does this is by kind of scraping it out and a lot of rinsing. He may even need to do a little drilling. I'm looking at it from the worst case scenerio, O.K.? Then he takes a little instrument puts some of the bone graft material on it, transfers it to the place in you mouth, on your jaw where it is needed, pats it down, may add someother material as needed, pulls the small flap up, sutures you up and you are all done. I worked as an Oral Surgery Assistant for 20 years and I've seen a hundred of these done. Of course each case is special as is each patient, so there's no one answer to all the questions pertaining to your specific procedure. Be clear with the doctor that you are extremely anxious about this. Perhaps they can offer the option of you having it done under general anesthesia or something they call a "Twilight Sleep". Afterwards there is usually very little bleeding however, you will have some swelling and some pain and discomfort. Ice, rest, an antibiotic and some prescription pain killers should take care of the after procedure issues. You'll do great! And just think, now you'll be able to have your bridge put on without loosing teeth and ending up with dentures! YIPPEE!! Good Luck! P.S. Information is Power. Talk to your Dr. more about what he is going to be doing if that's something you need to know in order to feel more in control of the situation.

yes, i just had it done recently. what are you scared of?

root canals feel worse. the bone graft actually starts off as some kind of bone powder, then they mix it with some kind of liquid, i couldn't really see from the dentist chair. then the whole thing turns into a malleable gel that they put into your gum where you are missing some bone. then they seal the whole thing up and put stitches in your gum to allow it to heal. during the process, the most painful part was getting the novacaine injections.

nothing to worry about, you'll be fine.

Don't worry, its no worse than any other procedure. Relax, as long as you're doped up, you won't really care.
