I have a 4 year old golden retriever and his hair in the back area alwyas stands up kind of like a cow lick. Does anyone know what I can do to get it to lay flat like you see at dog shows.

LOL Git 'em gang! That's how I do it with the goldens in my salon. You'll want a high-quality pair of thinning shears, but be careful--they bite if you're not paying attention. I would ask a groomer to demonstrate this in person the first time; you don't want to cut yourself or your dog. You don't want to cut the top layer of coat, that will just make it stick up more. Take the shears so they're parallel to the dogs skin and close them a couple of times (depends on how sharp your shears are--I just got a new pair and once will do it). Pull the shears away and comb out with a greyhound comb. It will pull out a bunch of hair from underneath, and this *usually* helps the top part of the coat to lie better. Sometimes I have to supplement this with creative trimming (with my regular shears) but I wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you're doing. My mom saw me do this on her dog once and figured she could do it too, and it took a lot more than creative "trimming" to fix what she did :).

The show dogs coat lays flat because that is a trait that has been selectively bred for.

There are many pet Goldens that have an incorrect curly coat. You can blow it dry why brushing it out and use some gel and hairspray, but it probably won't last for very long.

LOL I know how that is! I had a mixed breed dog several years ago he was part terrier and wiener dog... and I gave him a bath one time and I towel dried him...when his fur dried a patch of fur right before his tail started was sticking straight up. I tried EVERYTHING to get it to lay flat again! I even shaved that area to let it grow back in HOPING it would grow back in flat, but it didn't. I tried giving him a bath a again and blow dring it straight and no luck. So I just accepted his quircky little cowlick. It was kinda cute.

It's all just a matter of personal preference. I have short hair and guys like it. And i prefer a man with short hair over a man with long hair because long hair tends to make guys look as well girly.

Brush it everyday with even strokes, with a good dog brush. Use the kind of brush that one side is like a comb and the other side is a soft bristle brush.
