The terrorists are extremists...just as the followers of Jim Jones had all his Christian followers commit suicide. Both religions are peaceful people but there are those who twist what the Bible or Qumran says. It is not OK to kill people for no reason...other people or yourself.
But to answer your questions...the answers to your questions are all yes...with varying reasons.
Jesus said there will be wars & rumors of wars...He didn't say it is OK, just that it will be so. Some wars are because some people want to rule & control other people...Some wars are to protect people who are being victims of injustice & persecutions.
King Saul committed suicide...but to keep from being captured by the enemy & thus be tortured beyond endurance. As it was they cut off his head & impaled his body. I have read in religious literature that under such circumstances it is not a sin...it is the best choice of two evils.
It is a sin to harm another person. God is a God of love & peace & wants his people to so live. The fact is there are a lot of evil people in this world who do not live by that. That forces people to have to protect themselves, whether it is one person or a large group of people. Hitler exterminating the Jewish people just because the were Jews is an example of that. You don't try to kill a whole group of people just because you don't like them for whatever reason. That is evil & must be stopped no matter how much we are against war & harming other people.
You have listed the ideals of living this life & that is good. We should all try to live by that. Unfortunately, there are always people who do not practice that...so we do what we have to do to insure Justice, Peace & Freedom. It is very sad,

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is and I haven't read the Koran. I knew some muslims at one time though, and the mother in the family said (of such behavior) that is NOT Islam.

Since apparently no one else is willing to answer this question in the right spirit I might as well give the mature answer.
I have not read all the Koran or the Hadiths, but from what I have read I could see how some would interpret such passages to justify such immoralities. With this said the same could be said true of the Old Testament in which killing people who did not believe what they believed was not only consider morally ok, but actually a commandment of God. This was carried out to the point of mass Genocide (i.e. the land of Cannan, where modern day Israel is today.) This is clearly written in the Old Testament so don’t get crazy trying to question this. I’ve read the bible several times over and know very well what it says.
Christianity and Islam stem from ancient Judaism which encouraged such dysfunctional behavior. Modern day Jewish theology does not advocate this anymore because the religion has changed over the millennium of its existence, especially after the temple was destroyed. They created new interpretative texts (i.e. the Talmud) that took the edge of some of the more distasteful aspects.
However the foundation of such dysfunctions remained and were incorporated into Islam and used by Christianity via the Old Testament and Catholic Church, to justify many horrible acts in history. In fact this happen to such an omnipresent extent that genocide was enacted in Christian and Muslim territories alike to the point there were barely any other religious believers except people of the book were allowed to exist unhindered.
Do you ever wonder what happened to the pagans in these territories? Even those who claimed to be Muslims or Christians were killed off in mass if their doctrines were even slightly off from the theocracies in power. From what I have read, over a half a million Cathars were slaughtered by Pope Innocent the 3rd for simply believing in reincarnation, vegetarianism, and the feminine divine. Yeah, really dangerous doctrines they had there. They sounded peaceful and enlightened to me. No wonder they were killed off. History has a habit of getting rid of such people proving no good deed goes unpunished.
When it comes to today’s theology, of the three Christianity comes off as the most passive. The New Testament comes across as such because of passages like, turning the other cheek, loving thy enemy, do unto others as you'd have done unto you, live by the sword die by the sword, etc, etc, etc. Christianity is no longer a theocracy so a State Church cannot impose self serving theological decrees, etc.
As I said before the Jewish religion has changed, but Fundamental Islam is in large respect unchanged from its beginning. In part this is because they are the newest of these three religions. Also Fundamental Islam specifically advocates a theocracy. Mohammed was warring with other clans when he wrote the Qu’ran and used religion as a motivating tool for inspiration, gaining adherents, and control. This is not to say that nothing Good is in the Qu'ran, I am sure there are plenty good and beautiful passages within the book.
What I am saying is that there is plenty of room for heartless interpretations of the text. I am sure most Muslims are peaceful as most people have good hearts. But you only need a relatively small portion of the population to wreck havoc. If dysfunctions were not in the texts in the first place these small minded and or culturally manipulated people would not have ammunition to do such things.
The truth is religion is what you make it, but at the same time if you blindly adhere to any religious texts, and there are dysfunctions within, there will be suffering. Many will do so piously in the fickle heart of good intention, but for lack of better words they have become Pharisees who have stopped listening to the portion of their heart where God resides.
The solution in my opinion is to encourage as much free thinking and non religious affiliation but spiritual minded behavior as possible. Unfortunately some of these societies do not allow such variance and counter conversion often is punished to the point of death. This happens even in countries that legally allow counter conversion. There are vigilantes that take up the cause to fulfill what they think the Koran and Hadiths are telling them to do.
As you can see this is a grave problem and without much bravery and progressive Muslim leaders this problem will erupt, rather continue to erupt into a World War 3. I do not believe a one world Islam will be achieved, though this the goal of Islamic based extremism. But I do believe unimaginable suffering is inevitable. The extent to which this occurs is in part up to you, me, and the rest of the world.
I truly pray and will continue to work for world peace. Bless all who have chosen to read this, as well as those who have not.

what is your definition of terrorism?
Just asking because all of the things you listed are hardly limited to the islamic religion. Our country was founded with a war. And we broke the rules of war at the time in order to win. We didnt wear uniforms, we didnt stand in line to shoot at them, we pulled sneak attacks and guerilla tactics that we learned from the native tribes. But we didnt care. You know why? Because we wanted to be free of oppressors. We wanted to be able to decide how we wanted to live

I don't think the people who've answered here can claim that they've read the Quran and it's true interpretation. I think you'll get the best answer by reading the Book yourself.

Islam in no sense is related to Terrorism in any way. Islam is a Religion of Love, Peace, Harmony & Humanity. Extremists and Fanatics try to justify themselves with Islam & Teachings of The Holy Quran, But yet they DO fail to realize that what they are doing is amongst the greatest of sins a person can indulge in, which is, killing of innocents and Islam is The Religion which equates the Killing of one (innocent) life as to The Killing of all Human-kind, and to Safe one (innocent) life as to The Saving of all Human-Kind.
And its good that u talk abt Jihad, 'coz the misconception of this particular idea is not with the non-Muslims only but also many of the Muslims dont understand its concept. This word 'Jihad' is rooted from Arabic and it means "to strive or to struggle", it does NOT mean "holy war" and this is THE huge misconception. If i m preparing for my exams, i.e. i m striving to pass the exam, i m doing 'Jihad', if i m going for my job, i.e. i m striving to earn a living for me and my family, i m doing 'Jihad', but if i m fighting a non-Muslim to see who is strong or some other personal gain, its NOT 'Jihad'. 'Jihad' is NOT any war, fought by a Muslim against a NonMuslim and this is a THE root of all MISconceptions. Jihad in Islam is whatever we strive or struggle in order to propagate Islam in a peaceful manner and spread its teachings within Muslims as well as non-Muslims. 'Jihad' in war-sense refers to, either it is in self-defence, or it is a war against the tyranny of an oppressor, or if it is fought to propagate and spread Islam to any part of the world only for the will of GOD, NOT in any way to conquer a piece of land to rule. One other misconception that u had is that, 'Jihad' teaches the killing of innocent people, this cannot be any further from the truth. In true Islamic sense 'Jihad' does not teach killing of innocents, infact NOT a single place Islam teaches its believers to kill an innocent. To kill an innocent is like killing the all of humankind, and to save an innocent is like saving the all of human kind, this is the concept of Islam and this is what it promotes. Infact Muslims are ordered to fight against the person who kills innocents, whether he is a non-Muslim or even if he is a Muslim. In NO way Islam teaches the killing of innocent and it is a HUGE misconception, which i hope i have been able to clear abt Islam.
Commiting Suicide is Prohibited in Islam and the act itself of suicide is a great sin, because it comes from the root of another sin i.e., Hopelessness. No One has the right to commit suicide (take one's own Life), as Life is a Loan to us by GOD, and Only GOD can take it away when HE wants in Due Time.
Through various Hadiths (Prophet's Saying), we have come to know that, and it is a Point quite often stressed upon strongly, that No Person shall be caused Harm through the Hands of a Muslim, and if he Does, then he is Not Amongst the True Muslims.
I hope i cleared ur views abt Islam, and now, i invite u to Islam. Research on ur own abt Islam. Read The Holy Quran, Read Books of Hadiths (Prophet's Sayings), Research by Authentic Reliable Books & Sites (Don't count on sites that defame Islam, 'coz they spread mis-information and misconceptions abt Islam, and they cant even back up there claims with sufficient proofs, thus they are basically rambling Falsehood abt Islam). Do all this research on ur own and dont believe in anyone's hearsay (Not even mine). May GOD (ALLAH) guide u on The Path of Seeking The Truth. Peace to All.

It's the same thing as in christianity where it says that it's okay to set porn shops on fire and bomb abortion clinics.
You can't blame a religion for the behavior of its adherents; people are responsible for their own behavior.
