actually, it is a misconeption that all Catholic preists cannot marry. There is one order of Catholic priests who stayed with Rome during the first schism, and were married in the Eastern Tradition. As an indulgence, they are allowed to be married.
A priest marries the Church, much like nuns are Brides of Christ. He is the spiritual father, or shepard, of the flock. SImple.

"Father" is not the official title of a priest. For example, if my priest (Eastern Orthodox not Roman Catholic, but the analogy works anyway) writes a letter to his bishop, he does not sign it as "Father Nicholas". He signs it as "Priest Nicholas"- priest here meaning "presbyter" or elder as it calls the leaders of the early Christian community in Acts. He does not sign it as "Father" because in this case the paternal role belongs to his bishop to which he is subject. Father is a term of affection and respect used by the congregation. And no it is not a Roman Catholic thing only. St. Paul uses it to describe himself:
1 Corinthians 4:15- "For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you have not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel."
Note that St. Paul was himself celibate and exhorted others to celibacy as well. And not all priests are celibate. Uniate (Eastern Catholic) priests, priests under the "Anglican Use" (meaning they were former Anglicans who converted to catholicism and were allowed to retain their old rites and practices), Eastern Orthodox, Jacobite, and Nestorian priests are all called "Father"- and they all get married and have kids.

a father figure does not have to have been married or had children. Ever hear of adoption? A father figure is different than a biological father. And why did marriage even show up in this question?

He is a Spiritual Father
Even in the Gospels the priests of the Sanhedren were addressed as "Father". Read where Stephen was arrested and began his speech..."Fathers.....Brothers......"
By the way....Priests are not leaders or overlords....they are servants.

The Apostle Paul warns that one of the identifying features of the apostasy that was to come would be ENFORCED CELIBACY, "FORBIDDING TO MARRY." (1 Tim 4:1, 3)
Some of the apostles were married. (1 Cor. 9:5; Luke 4:38).
GREAT QUESTION!

LOL never thought of it that way.... funny. Yeah, why?
He's given up being a man already, so then become a father? a little stretch there...
Many of them do become fathers though, little babies scattered around their congregation without a proper dad..tss..tss sad!
Let's vote for the priests to have families!.. where do I sign?
