If you had to select one of these vehicles to buy from Carmax, which would it be and why? I know none of them are very exciting. Thanks for the advice!

you're in luck! J.D.Power & assoc just released their results of a study they did of 2003 vehicles for dependability.
According to this sudy of vehicles already on the road for 3 years, Ford is ranked #12, above the industry average.
Pontiac- #15, Below average & Chevrolet came in at #19.
So I would choose the Taurus, based on dependability.
The Taurus also has an excellent safety rating & because it has been an extremely popular 'company vehicle' there are entire fleets of them being retired.
For this reason, I would definatly reconsider WHERE you are purchasing your Taurus. You will pay considerably MORE for an 03 Taurus at Carmax, then at your local Ford dealer.
Call or look at a Ford dealer for a "Ford Certified Pre-Owned " Taurus & not only will you get an extended warranty built in at no additional charge, but Ford Motor Credit also offers low financing for these vehicles.
Look at the WHOLE picture, my friend.
Interest rate & warranty should play a major role in your purchase decision.
You may even find an 04-05 Taurus at a Ford dealer with cheaper PAYMENTS & a better warranty at a Ford dealer, than a Chevy or a Pontiac at Carmax
BONUS: many Taurus are flex-fuel. If the 8th character of the VIN# is a 2, then it is capable of using ethanol fuel and/or gasoline ( & any combination of the 2 )

A Malibu is one of Chevy's best. A Taurus is known for trouble; and a Pontiac? Well, let's just say DON'T GO THERE!!!
