If you work a lot and are gone from your house quite a bit, I would say a cat. They keep their business in potty box and really don't demand too much. When their babies they do tend to be the most playful at night. A puppy while cry a lot in the beginning if its away from you, so if you're in an apartment I don't think neighbors will enjoy that. Both of them are great when they're older but either one will do the job of comforting you when you need it.

That would depend on a variety of things. How much space will you have? How much time will you have for the pet? How much time and energy do you have for excercize? How much pet can you afford?

Cats and small dogs do better in apartments than large dogs.
Cats require less attention and training than dogs, but they do still require both.
Dogs should not be taken out and back in immediately after "going". Dogs need at least a mile a day walk for excercize to avoid nervousness and certain behavioral problems.
Both cats and dogs are expensive, but cats can be slightly cheaper for spay and neuter. This is offset by the increased price of constant kitty litter.

Make sure you know what it will cost to care for the pet before you adopt any animal. They will need spay/neuter to maintain health and full life span, yearly shots and checkups in case of health problems. This is all in adition to the regular costs of food, toys and other needed items like kitty litter if you choose a cat.

If you decide that you can have either a cat or a dog with no problems, the best suggestion is to go to the local humane society and look at all of the animals there, or on www.petfinder.com. You can look at a wide variety and find the one that suits you best. When you meet the animal, you will know. Adopting a pet from the humane society saves that pet from death. Animal shelters recieve hundreds of abandoned animals every single day. There is simply not enough room, finances or homes for all of them. Every animal adopted is one more that isn't killed.

And remember to spay and neuter. 7 dogs and cats are born for every human being. That only adds to the THOUSANDS of animals humane societies put to sleep every year, as well as reducing your pets overall lifespan, increasing their risk of cancer and other diseases and risking them during labor. (Small dogs often require a C-section even for "normal" pregnancies)

I used to have a dog but now have a cat. It depends on where you leave as a dog needs more space o exercise. If you do not have much time, keep a cat as they live better in small places (apartments etc) and are more independent. All you need is just a litter box and you don't need to walk them.

Without a doubt a dog, they are more loving, and more loyal than a cat. Besides you can do more with a dog they are better companions. They are great companions for walks, car rides, and a day at the park. After I broke up with my boyfriend and lost my brother I got a puppy. He filled up a great deal of my time and filled an empty spot. It helped a lot to get out and go for along walk with him. Besides I can not stand the smell of a litter box, and cats carry more diseases.

If you want a petwho needs you to take care of them, get a dog. If you would rather them be independent get a cat. Both will most likely cuddle you, and keep you company.

Oh definitely a dog, they're much more company than a cat. However, if you're not going to be home to often then you should get a cat, since they can be home alone longer than a dog.

Dogs 'type' on the human they know best considering themselves part of the 'pack' which they would belong to in natural surroundings. This makes them more dependant and 'loving' to you.
Cats are naturally solitary creatures but exploit the situation with humans as they provide food and shelter for a small amount of attention and sitting on your lap!
The big advantage of a cat is that it is self cleaning and does not have to be taken for walks!

Your choice, my personal choice is dogs but you must have time to spend with them. Cats are independent less time. But here's a little hint, if you are newly single from divorce and not ready for dating and need protection call me, no really sorry get a dog, med. to large breed BUT if you are in an apt. you may want to find out what weight limit there will be and deposit. Plus dogs are 'men catchers' if your over him and ready to land one again cats are usually turn offs for guys unless they have an effeminate side, sorry guys but research says so.

Dog. Always nice to come home, open the door and your dog is sitting there waiting for you. Also good protection since you are a young single female.
