You are right (these people haven't gotten the news yet)!
You don't need to drink 8 glasses of water a day. You certainly don't need 1/2 your body weight (in oz.) per day. You don't need ANY arbitrary target amount per day. Drink when you're thirsty. Period!

My friend who is a Physician states a very simple way to figure out your average daily needed intake of water. Take your body weight, divide it by 2, and that is the fluid ounces of water that you need to drink daily to remain hydrated. 80% of americans are chronically dehydrated. This causes headaches, fatigue, and other health problems. Since I weight about 220. I need to drink about 110 fluid ounces of water a day. Since I've been drinking this much, and sometimes even more, I've felt alot better, have more energy, less headaches, and I'm more active. Cutting caffeine out of your daily routine helps alot as well. I've cut down to 1 can of soda a day (when I wakeup), and I hope to eliminate caffeine all together soon.

6-8 glasses(1.2-1.6 litre) is a generalization you may require more or less depending upon your body type, job profile and activity level.
You should notbe feeling thirsty at any time.
your body should have enough water to flush out all the metabolic wastes with ease.
A easy way to check whether you are taking enough water is to observe the color of your urine- ideally it should be colurless and never deep yellow (unless you are on some medication)
do not limit your self , do not force yourself.

8 glasses of water per day is a must. If you want, you can always cross the limit... and drink more! Water is good for your body.

More water is required in summer than in winter. You should drink 15 glasses of water if you have got kidney stones. Similarly you have to drink more water in disease conditions such as fever, diarrhea, etc.

For healthy reasons, eight 8 oz glasses of water are recommended. But, to stay slim, healthy, and energized, I would recommend 10 eight oz glasses.
