Can't people be more civil to one another. Let's face it. This is a very diverse world we live in. Everybody's got their own points of view and their own belief systems but how about a little more respect and tolerance for the next person. I'm not saying not to express how you feel vehemently and with conviction and not to tell the other person that he or she is wrong if that is what you believe but do we have to call each other ugly names and revile each other's characters. I am putting this question into etiquette because I think it has to do with how we treat others. I am speaking simply here of respect and rudeness.

I thank all of you for sharing your thoughts on this subject with me. In a certain sense I meant this to be a rhetorical question but see that the issue of name calling and hurling insults is one that has affected you all. I have to choose a best answer and that is no easy task since so many, if not all of you had some choice words of wisdom. You ALL deserve the 10 points.

It would be nice, but it seems that it is a rarity.

Many assume their opinions are correct (we're in the land of generalities, okay) and they have no patience for a differing thought. I also find that many people do not know how to handle friendly disagreement.

Where does it come from? Thinking less of others than we do of ourselves. I'm certainly guilty of it more often than I care to admit.

First part, probably not.
It would be nice if people were more civil. We are suppose to be living in a place where we have certain freedoms, but so many times if you don't agree with the masses or what some people think, you're a bigot or a traitor or not christian. The whole thing makes no sense. Common sense would tell you hey everyone is different we live in a place where there are differences of opinions and beliefs and ways of living. As long as you aren't hurting anyone what the hell business is it of the person next to you. It certainly isn't your place to call them names or assassinate people's character. It seems on a whole our society has become much ruder.
I guess common sense isn't that common.

Well first off, you certainly have chosen the correct category, because etiquette is what it's all about, isn't it? I have to agree with you. People seem to be unable to express themselves without denigrating and putting down someone or something else. Which is a shame. There are so many great beliefs and convictions, that please and satisfy so many people, that it's hard to understand why some people want the whole world to think the same way as they do.
Ugly names don't do a thing, except make the caller sound petty.

Yes, it's possible - the reason why controversial questions are controversial is because some groups people can be extremely sensitive about particular topics & the truth hurts. I agree that everyone has their own sets of beliefs. However, we must still be objective in seeking the truth & logic behing our thinking or else we'll end up being suckers to be manipulated by so called "leaders".

Most importantly, one should not force his belief/thoughts upon others

That is a very good question, the simple truth of the matter is you can't please everyone, you may say something and the other person may take it the wrong way. Even though you may not have stated it that manner. I live in a small town with less then 2500 people. I have been in more fights that I care to mention verbal and physical. I will stress it one more time you can't please everyone..
Just because you may be in a good mood, does not mean that the next person you run into is going to be nice, S*** happens that we can not control. Just take the good with the bad and be happy.

This goes for all who ask questions here in YA. Not all people answers seriously to questions, some just wants points i guess and are too immature to actually think that these are legitimate questions that people courageously ask becasue they needed some answers. Let's face it too that there are people who ask questions that are totally ridiculous.
If any asker enounters any rude answers, just ignore them, move on to the next one that is more serious and helpful. You can ask people to be respectful but it doesn't necesarily mean they will be.
How we wish that YA staff can actually reject answers that are hurtful and immature. what a wonderful world this would be if it is possible in real life, too. oh well

Many people in hear are answering question on a tv monitor..and they feel brave enough to call people names and throw in abusive words ..and most of it is childish immaturity ..if it were a discussion face to face the rudeness would not be so apparent.

Depends on the controversial question. I just went into a tyrant over a group of Yahoo Answers FORGVING a girl and telling her GOD will forgiver her because she's planning to MURDER soneone.

Now, are those people idiots or what!

I tell YOU, I'm going to get a gun and murder someone, do you think God will hate me and you say

No, he loves you.

What does that tell me, the potential murder and what does that say about you!

You just help me justify what I am planning to do!

You just told me it was cool.

Remember that when you see a bunch of Muslims putting bombs into their luggage and telling you they are going to board a plane and blow it up.

You say: HAve a nice trip and go about your business!

I find that most controversial questions are not well thought out before asked. And that they are obviously meant to arouse anger in the reader. So it is only natural that one would receive a derogatory answer.

Yes but it takes quite a bit of maturity and self-control by all parties, and that's what's nearly impossible. When people are offended/feel that they're being 'attacked' it's natural for them to get emotional - and to strike out. The simplest way to 'defend' themselves is to attack the speaker on a personal level - I guess in the hopes of enraging him/her and taking the person down to their (emotional) level? Lots of people find it much easier to win a fight that way.
