In 1994, when this movement started, Carlos Salinas was still in power as President for PRI party. The southern states of Mexico were being excluded from all development and progress, mostly because of its high indigenous population. You could still find huge land owners of foreign decent, but what is ignored is that after the Revolution and all land was divided amoung the people of Chiapas, these same people started to sell their land since they didn't use it to produce anything so the parcels got smaller and smaller. Now Marcos wanted to get the land back for them, make the government give federal loans so they could work the land once again. Of course, the government would have to expropriate and pay billions for the land involved. And who would pay? of course taxpayers would end up doing it. And what would happen? Once again these people would sell off the land since they really don't have intentions to work the land. The Land Reform after the Revolution states clearly, the land should be owned by whom will work it.
Marcos isn't even Mexican, he is from somewhere in South America. He is still there, living a fairly low profile, and hasn't been able to make any progress with his intentions. It isn't easy to go against the Mexican Constitution nor the Land Reform Laws unless your have a powerful army and lots of money and even then, he would have to answer for lots of lives of innocent brainwashed people who think it is easy to get back what the Revolution gave them and they sold out of poverty? greed? not caring? lazy?

Mexican history and current affairs in Mexico are very interesting, the culture, politics, economy. It's easy to critize but uderstanding the people of Mexico is a challenge.

I'm sorry...

i don't know what EZLN stands for, can you please explain?

Oh well, I believe that they're kind of fighting for their indigenous people, although Marcos himself isn't even indigenous...

Most of them are from Chiapas but I believe they're fighting a losing battle...Although they still have pride, Mexico has become a nation. ... They should be part of it specially since they're Native Mexicans.

I believe that it can end up in a tragedy because they believe in anarchism so if it goes big, they can start a civil war..

hopefully they keep their organization a non-violent one.
