For individuals who suffer from periodic attacks of insomnia, hops tea will provide a gentle glide into natural sleep. Valerian, while more popular, can leave a person with a slight morning headache and a mild addiction if over used. Hops are not habit forming, and can be used with children.

firstly, remove as much caffeinated products and processed food from your diet as possible. Fresh, unprocessed food will fill you up more and is not full of all the rubbish that can affect sleeping patterns (ie. artificial this, synthesised that...)

next, try increasing your excercise levels. I do not know how much excercise you already do, but even just a walk at night after dinner can help. It seems quite logical that the more excercise you do, the more exhausted your body will get, and the easier you will find it to fall asleep.

if these tips don't help you can also try:

warm milk (acts as a sedative)

warm bath or shower (soothing)

lavendar oil/ products (again, mild sedative effect)

valerian (a herbal sleeping aide)

also.... try keeping the lights very low (dimmers can be great for this) and removing any stimulating objects from your room (ie. tv, game station etc.)

try keeping your room as a haven for sleeping (avoid doing study / work in there), this way when you enter your room, your body will 'know' it's time to sleep.

keep a pad and paper next to your bed, if there is anything on your mind at night (or if you wake up thinking about anything)write it down on the paper. That way you know you can think about it in the morning (you won't forget, it's on the paper!), and you can stop worrying about it at night.

FINALLY.....

calm down! I know that seems impossible, but I suffered insomnia for (what seemed like) an eternity, and whern I actually just LET GO of worrying about, it seemed to fix itself! Good luck and happy sleeping :)

I have a 1 drink or 2 enough to make me drowsy but not buzzed. Then I am out and no headache or hangover to deal with! Another idea: Read a really boring book, your eyes will get heavy in no time! Last one to try: Listen to an audio tape of a story, the constant voice will make you sleep!

Get real comfortable. Breath deeply, long slow deep breaths for about three minutes. Now breath normally and think only of your breathing. Count your breaths. In count one, out count two, in count three, out count four and so on. Do not think of anything else but your breath. If you do think of something else start counting over. You have to stay very focused. If you have trouble doing that, while you are counting, see blackness, and focus on seeing only blackness while counting.

Most people cannot get to 10. If you do find it easy for you to count, then count inhale and exhale as one, next inhale and exhale count two, and so on.

If you focus hard enough your mind will rest and you will fall asleep. Good luck.
