I am trying to drive up to LA to pick up my friends at union station, but I want to park my car while I am sight-seeing. I am not familiar with LA + I am not a good driver, so I want to park where it's safe and easy to find. I heard union station has parking lots - are they safe? Does anybody know?

I've lived in the Los Angeles area my whole life, as did my mother. I've never been ot a part of Los Angeles that I felt unsafe.... during the day. Don't go to Watts or South Central at night, but those aren't exactly tourist destinations. If you want to go to the shopping district, there's a great lot at 4th & San Pedro. If you want to go to the flower mart, there's a free lot above Muscotel's on San Julian. There is parking at Union, but it's very expensive. Down in the shopping district you can find lots for all day that'll run you $10 or less. Then hop on the subway or DASH line, both are cheap.
Below 8th is just fine. You can even pay someone a few bucks to watch your car & they'll stick to it like glue & even feed the meter for you! The only thing I'd find of value in that package is feeding the meter. These folks are people, just like you & me. I've been amazed at how much more honest they are than many people I've met. I had a $5 bill fall out of my pocket & someone picked it up & ran me down to give it back to me. He refused any kind of compensation, said his soul was healed a little bit by doing things like that. They often aren't as clean as we'd like, but htey have no place to wash. But... they're people & for the most part.... good people. I go down there often w/ no worries about my safety. I worked at a law firm on the edge of skid row & had to walk thru skid row to get from my car to the office. I never had a problem & I'd get there very early.

Hey hun - Stay as close to 1st street as you can. You don't want to be past 8th at any time of the day. There is parking by Union Station and they should be very safe. As long as you don't have a Porsche it should be fine. All parking lots downtown have security. Just don't stay too late you don't want to be walking around. Are you sightseeing downtown? Or parking at Union Station and taking the Bus or Metrolink?

Safe and LA do not go together. What a resident of LA considers safe and what you or I consider safe are two very different things.
