no dog WANTS to be separated from your family like that. the ones that are forced to live most of their life out in the yard are lonely, forgotten, and without a connection with his family. please wait till you can have a house pet.

In my opinion dogs belong outside, dogs were quiet fine outside before humans came along and made them pets. It's totally upto you. As long as you still give them attention and play with them there shouldn't be a problem.

I have Newfies that are out most of the time. Large double coated breeds love it out. They love snow, and they love to swim and always be wet in the summer.
The outside dogs do require more care though. You need to be giving heartworm preventitive, flea control, check ears and nails a lot,TONS of coat care, check pads a lot, provide toys, and go for walks.
Just because they are outside, does not mean they have less needs. They actually have more. And I would never have one dog outside..they need company!!!!!!!!!!!
Not all "outside" dogs are alone and neglected!!! I bet my dogs get a ton more attention, exercise, and mental stimulation than most inside dogs. Many people think if they are inside they are where they should be. What about all the dogs that are in crates or alone all day?????????? I do not think those dogs are better off because they are inside. It is totally the amount of attention and other interaction they get.
And really..some dogs just like it better outside!!!! They can do dog like things, like digging, playing, and rolling!!!!!! There is very little mental stimulation for dogs in the house. Little dogs are fine, but many working, sporting, and herding dogs need a lot!!!!
So don't judge people having dog outside before thinking about how many inside dogs have it!

It really depends on why you only want the dog outside? Are you trying to deter people away and intimidate them with the presence of a dog? Then you'll be looking for a guard dog....rottweiler, pit bull, doberman, great pyranese. Any outside dog can learn to respect your rules inside too, even with kids, you just need to spend time with them.

We have a blue heeler mix that would be miserable in the house. We live in the country, she has a big yard to run in and she is one of the happiest dogs that I have ever seen. Being part herding dog, she needs room to run around, not be shut up in a house all day and night. Maybe a blue heeler mix would be a good dog for you too.
People think the bigger dogs are happy inside. The truth is they are bored to death.

I hate to see any dog stuck outside because they end up being ignored. For reasons like...we forget about him being out there, he stinks (DUH), and he jumps all over me(another duh...he is thrilled to see somebody). BUT if you have to have an outside dog...try rescuing on that is used to it and/or prefers it. A husky or similar mix with a long coat. AND PLEASE do pay attention to it and feed it or don't do it.

Dogs belong in a pack or a family. Never leave one alone outside in a dog house, please.
