In Down syndrome there are certain characteristic features in the appearance which may individually be quite subtle but together permit a clinical diagnosis of Down syndrome to be made at birth. These signs of Down syndrome include slight flattening of the face, minimal squaring off of the top of the ear, a low bridge of the nose (lower than the usually flat nasal bridge of the normal newborn), an epicanthal fold (a fold of skin over top of the inner corner of the eye, which can also be seen less frequently in normal babies), a ring of tiny harmless white spots around the iris, and a little narrowing of the palate. There are many, many more minor malformations in Down syndrome.
Down syndrome is also associated with a number of major malformations. For example, approximately a half of Down syndrome children are born with a heart defect, most often a hole between the two sides of the heart. For another example, Hirschprung disease (congenital aganglionic megacolon) which can cause intestinal obstruction occurs more frequently in children with Down syndrome than in other children.

There are varying degrees of the physical characteristics in each individual. A person may have some, but not all of those characteristics and they may or may not be obvious. As a mom of a young son with DS, I know many families with kids who also have DS and they all look quite different, but do share some common physical characteristics. We don't tend to think of them as malformations, however.
In young babies, it can be virtually impossible to see some of the facial characteristics until they get a bit older. Having a karyotype done is the best way to get an actual diagnosis.

No. They could have them to different extents, but anyone with an extra chromosome 21 will have the characteristic physical abnormalities. However, there are lots of things besides Down's syndrome that can cause mental retardation.

you're a splash obscure on your question. the splendid answer is you cope with them like every person else. If the guy with DS is doing sometime incorrect or beside the point, i might wish Kimberly might basically confer with them overtly and clarify the region, basically such as you will possibly with any chum. Or is it Kimberly having the concern?? Is she uncomfortable or does she sense awkward together with her chum? if so than she desires to choose why she has those emotions.

No they can not. Its part of the syndrom. They have an extra chromisom. 21 to be spicific. normaly we have two one from our mom and one from our dad but sometimes the egg or sperm has two and you get down syndrome. the "deformity" is part of it.

malformations? i prefer characteristics, my beautiful boy has extra skin in the folds of his eyes & they slant up slightly instead of down .there are different types of downs- one type you can't tell . it is sad that these children are prejudged by their face & not their ability ,they really are quite capable & you would be amazed by their abilities

No, it's part of the condition. Those with mental retardation have no physical characteristics.
