It is true. However, one should not conclude about a religion by looking at its followers, but should look to the religion itself. Islam gave rights to women when women were under goring so much persecution at the hands of men in the lands of Arabia. Today, the religion gives the same rights elevating women in society to be recognized as being equal to men but different. As observers of the treatment of women in different Islamic societies, we often fail to distinguish between culture and the religion. It is always the culture that is treating the women as having less rights than women elsewhere, not Islam. A general understanding of Islam, should reveal the respect, fair treatment, and duties and roles prescribed for women. It is this that distinguishes Muslim women from the non Muslim. Of course, one has to look at what "more rights" means. Comparisons between Muslim and non Muslim women have to be made on a grand scale, not just one aspect, such as liberty to chose the way a woman dresses and so on. The comparison should include that of the level happiness, treatment from men, social status and class level, as well as work environment and family relations.

When a parent dies, there wealth and properties are equally divided between All the children not just the sons. This wasn't the case here in the West until a few decades ago where the elder son got the bulk of the inheritance.

i'm a muslim lady and so far I have no reason to be envious of the rights of the non-muslim ladies. its not that i'm dependent, but here we are well protected and cared for by our father, brothers, husband and sons. btw, in islam your husband's possion is also half your possession, but your possession is your possession only!

yes, islam has given many rights to women. but why are only women in middle east focussed on, why dont they show muslim women who are sucessful.? muslims dont just live in middle east in first place.

do u know that during the Taliban regimen itself, there was a woman named Syeda in Afghanistan, who inspite of the death threats from them, used to carry out health clinics and underground schools for girls. and after the fall of Taliban, ahe has 5 health clinics for women and 17 schools today. see that is a muslim woman, she has the guts. when the west has never had a single woman President, Pakistan had Benazir Bhutto. that is a muslim woman.

muslims all over the world are trying to make those sisters life more peaceful who are not as fortunate as us. we are striving our best to better our selves in all feilds. its not that we are going to let them rot in hell what the Taliban or the West has created.

u talked about the saudi women who never have to shop for groceries and drive cars. why should they when thay have Chauffers to drive for them and maids to do all their household chores.? do u know most muslim women never work, not becoz they are not allowed to but becoz they dont have to. see thats the difference. we dont let our women work to fill our stomachs, men can work for them. how many native women of Paris have u seen shopping at designer boutiques. u will find double the number of kuwaiti women shopping there. u know why, they dont have to work, pay taxes or worry abut funding for children's education. the Govt does that.

islam has given many rights to women, but there a few people like those in all faiths that have taken the rights of a muslimah. but they are a minority as they are very poor. how can a poor man who doesnt have anything to feed his kids for the next mealtime ask his daughter to study.?

let me 1st tell u that many muslim countries esp those in middle east are uneducated and they dont have jobs. the economy is so poor that most of them have nothing to feed their kids for the next mealtime. now how do u think such people can buy bombs, explosives and guns that cost millions.?

apart from that, they see that many people from the rest of the world attacking their children, brothers, mothers. they see people from other countries coming as soliders of peace and raping their wives, and daughters. now how do u think a hungry, uneducated, jobless man who is tortured in every sense, will react ? he will be more than willing to bomb himself for justice.

the problem here is such mass of people are easy traps for extremists. they can be easily misled just by showing what had been done to their family.

THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

it was islam that said - Paradise is at the feet of ur mother. and that a woman deserves more honor, repesct, care and attention than men. muhammed-pbuh said - 'when a man marries he completes half his faith, the rest half is by serving Allah.'

u must remember that when the west says that women and men are equal, islam says that women is exalted than man, much higher than man.

when the church said Eve-pbuh was the reason for the Fall of Mankind, then islam said no both Adam and Eve-pbut were equally responsible.

when no women of any faith had ever given sermons or preached their faith, it were muslim scholars like hazrath Ayeshar.a and hazrath Khadijah- r.a or Fatimah-r.a who gave a no:of hadith. when other religions said that a woman should not be educated, then it was islam that said that women should be educated.

when the pagans practised female infanticide, even today many do, then muhammed-pbuh said 'a man who kills his own daughter is killing a part of himself and throwing it away. and neither Allah nor His messenger will be close to such a man'

how many people know that there is a mention of a woman, a wife of an ordinary wood cutter in Quran just becoz she was obedient to her husband.

when people said Mary was having an illegimate child, it was Quran the said no Maryam-a.s is exalted more than any woman. how many people know that the wife of the Pharoah, asiyah-r.a who took moses from a basket in Nile was blessed with Heaven for her good deeds.

when, christian widows were shaved bald, so that they would not remarry, it was islam that said that a widow has the right to remarry. proof, muhammed's wife except for his last wife were widows whose husbands dies in wars, epidemics or whose husbands left them for another woman.

when the pagans considered that women were 2nd class citizens and they cant hold assests and properties, it was islam that said that a woman has the right over her property, her father's property, her husband's property. and that a man even after his death should write a will and should equally distribute his wealth among his wife, parents, siblings, children and community. if a muslim woman earns it is not necessary that she gives her earnings to her husband, if she wants to.

it was islam that said that Muta(Temporaray or contract marraige) was forbidden as there was no difference between muta and prostitution.

islam and muhammed-pbuh never said that women should wear burkha, but they did say that they should cover their private parts so that she will not be a victim of sexual abusers.

in islam on the day of marraige the preist will ask both the bride and groom if they are willing for the marraige thrice. if a girl either refuses to answer or says no, the marraige is null and void and there is no marraige. infact if a girl agrees only then will the proposal of marraige is accepted. in islam until a man gives a proper reason for divorce, a divorce is NOT VALID. and they have to wait for 3 months to see if their love will unite the couple together. also a woman has the right to divorce her husband if he is not a man of character or if he mistreats her.

if a man remarries, he should have the following or try fulfilling these:
he should be able to provide all his wives as well as children through her and should not treat anyone unjustly
a man cannot remarry if his wife has a problem. until the 1st wife agrees the man cannot marry a second woman. such marraiges where the wife doesnt agree, are null and void.
a man should remarry a widow
a man can remarry if the new-to-be bride is poor without any family or any financial background(very very poor)
when wars or epidemics strike, more women are found widows, in that case a man can remarry a widow with his permission from wife.
when his wife can bear no child then marraige is always better than heterozygous IVF or heterozygous Artificial insemination.

when women's witneses in other countries were not taken into valid accounts, Allah gave a verse in the Quran, then let 2 women give witnesses to the same incident, so that if one forgets the other will remind her.

when a man tries to falsely blame a woman for her chastity, the Allah says in the Quran, let them bring 4 witnesses to justify the woman in question. if they fail to do so, then there is a punishment for them both on earth and Heavens.

burkha is not just for covering ourselves. clothes are to cover ourselves not display our bodies. and no religion says shed ur clothes and have open fornication.
