Water going up your nose probably contains a fair amount of chlorine and other harsh chemicals. Besides, the stuff coming out of your runny nose isn't water, it's mucus, which your nose is used to.

How often do you hear someone ask for a nice cold refreshing glass of snot? Dude, the stuff coming out of your nose is snot or brain fluid, definitely not water. Years ago for you it was brain fluid, now we can be sure it's snot.

It is the chlorine in the water that burns. Or if you are in a public pool, cold be something else. But it is more than likely the chlorine.

because the mucous in your nose really comes from your throat... when you breathe water up your nose it goes into your nasal passages... only air is meant to go there.
