People are confusing the fact that there is a word in Spanish with the idea of a surname. The surname Vamos is overwhelmingly Hungarian from the looks of the NY passenger records.

Out of 145 Ellis Island records, none is Spanish or Portuguese. Perhaps this might help you refine your search:

Spanish origin but then there are a lot of Spanish speaking countries.
