Personally, I'd go for a dog at the pound or at your local rescue shelter or ASPCA. In those situations, you'll be able to meet with the dog and spend time with him/her. Also in those situations, the people who work there have already worked with the animal to make sure they work well with children and other animals. Petfinder.com has a list of local animals at local shelters and will mark down whether or not the pet is good with kids, dogs, or cats, or even if it is a special needs pet.
For a young child, I would suggest getting an older dog (2 or 3 years) already housetrained, so you won't be running up to clean up the recent mess your dog made while cleaning crayon off the walls at the same time. You may also want to look into getting a dog that is larger for your child. Maltese and Chihauhaus are great dogs and all, but a six year old may not know their own strength and pet the dog too roughly, as well as easily trip over the dog. I worked in a daycare for a year and I heard stories from parents where their new puppy got hurt because they weren't paying attention to how the child was treating the dog. It wasn't meant maliciously, it's just that children don't know better.
Also because your child is so young, and if you're not into getting a shelter dog, you may want to look into getting a mixed breed such as a cockapoo or a labradoodle. I suggest these, because as a child, you are more likely to have allergies or grow into allergies to pets and dander. Looking into an "allergy free" pet such as the breeds listed above may be a safer bet for you, your family, and your child's friends. These breeds and so many more like them, come in many different sizes and colors.
Good Luck and enjoy you're new dog!

I have a 6 year old little girl. We have 2 dogs that are inside, a Yorkie and a Boston Terrier. They both were easy to train, I just let them outside every couple-few hours, if they need to go before I am ready to let them out, they keep looking at me and the door. They are very friendly with my daughter and they let me know when anyone is at the door. Great dogs, they are part of the family.
Good luck!
You can also try the animal shelter, lots of dogs there that would greatly appreciate a loving family and a warm home.

I personally would try a Brussels Griffon! They are so ugly that they are cute, neat dogs really. But if you have allergies I would recommend a Bichon Frise, they are a bit hard to potty train though... very stubborn. Chihuahua's tend to be nippers with little kids especially if they have never had experience with animals. You should really look up the breeds in the AKC or UKC website or like some of the others said try your local animal shelter and rescue a dog. Good Luck, make sure your child goes with you so that they can pick, much better bonding.

I don't think any dogs go with small children...That being said a Boxer is your best bet...They are the most wonderful dogs, and easy to train! The only draw back I have seen with them, is they HAVE to be around people all the time. So, if you work full-time, and are never going to be home, go with a golden retriever. A word of caution, Stay away from Collies or any other sheep dogs, they do not always do well with children, even though they are lovely dogs, because they do not like any commotion. They are bred to herd sheep, and their natural instinct will come out when children get loud and carry on...Hope this helps and God bless!

A Golden Retriever is the best dog in the world for kids. They are easy to train. I had mine house broke before he was 10 wks old. He has a 2 year old hanging on his tail all day long with no growling or nothing. He loves to play with other dogs as well.

Boxers are good if you want a big dog plus they are smart. They are also pretty big though, if you want a small dog go for a cocker spaniel. They are loyal, small, friendly, playful and they are SOOO CUTE! Plus they are really smart. Poodles are good too, a little hyper sometimes and high maintenance but they are good dogs too. Terriers are really hyper and they LOVE to play. Their are other breeds of terrier besides jack russel, I have an American Rat Terrier and he's small, VERY VERY smart (he's little box trained), they love to play, are loyal, do great indoors. Pugs are pretty good dogs too.

I have raised Golden Retrievers, they are easily trained and so wonderful around children, mine seem to sense a child and adjust their behaviot accorfingly.I cannot think of a better dog for a child, again tho, get a puppy and let the child help choose and interact with it from the start.

Look at www.petfinder.com for a rescue group in your area that fosters their animals in volunteers' homes. This way the dog can be evaluated by experience people and often times trained before you get it. I would not get a tiny dog that is too fragile to be played with for young children. Make sure to teach your child to respect the dog and they will be friends for life. Good luck.

Dogs are not designed to live indoors. When Mother Nature spent thousands of years designing them, she was designing with the outdoors in mind, not the indoors. Try a hamster or something if you don't want an animal that needs to be outside.

Black Lab!!!!
We got the one that we currently have when my sister was 6 years old and we never had a problem. I've heard that black labs, yellow labs, chocolate labs, and golden retrievers are the best for younger kids and if you just want a dog that obeys you, easy to train, friendly, and is very loving.
