It only works if you have the intention of someday in the near future moving near them or them moving near you. Otherwise its like what the above poster said. You can only do so much talking, there needs to be a physical bond as well. A relationship is only a friendship unless you can hold their hand, kiss, cuddle, and even make love together.

It sucks, but unless you can visit them on a regular basis or one of you moves close to the other, then its probably a waste of your time and emotions to consider it anything more than a friendship. And please don't try to move on the off chance that it might work. Relationships are hard work and most of them don't work out, so don't do something silly on the off chance that you'll win the lottery!

Some people says it works, some people don't. It maybe because we're all uniquely different... I met my bf over the net and we have lot things in common as well as some contrasts and we're planning to get married.

I believe it depends on the way you two talks about. Are there any plans or even conversations that sounds serious that you need to give your trust? If you think you can trust him then give it a try, you'll never know unless you do...

Ways to make it work? hmmm... constant communication... me and my bf aside from chatting online, we constantly call overseas and/or send text messages...

They work if it's fairly easy to see each other in person. If you can't do that on a fairly regular basis it's most likely not going to work. Eventually one of you will find somebody in the real world and totally forget about the online partner. I've seen it happen many times.

My boyfriend and I are struggeling and hes in texas going to college and we've been going out for two years, and we love each other but distances strains people. You never met this guy so its easier but eventually your going to want things, like to cuddle and kiss him and hold hands. So its not that good of an idea in my mind. Its actually going to be what breaks my boyfriend and I up.
