Hi Clint...there are several home made deterrents that you can use which are not harmful yet very effective. One is placing double-sided sticky tape on surfaces to stop your cat from either clawing at it or jumping into unwelcomed spaces. Cats dislike getting their feet stuck so after making a few more attempts they soon learn to avoid those areas. Another is using citronella scent/oil (found at any pet store). The scent is enough to put off most cats so people use this outside the home for stray cats.

Cats tend to hate both aluminum foil and sticking things. So one option is to line wherever you don't want them to go with foil or put double-sided tape (or simply loop over regular tape) on cardboard or a similar item. When they step on either of those things, they should dislike it and learn to avoid the area.
