Is this the "life of the spirit" that the New Testament admonishes you to live? Is it not just a return to "the law" ("following the rules")?

Can't you learn all about what God wants from you if you just listen to the Holy Spirit within you? Or do you not really know how? Quoting Bible verses incessantly only makes people think you don't know for yourself what you're talking about.

Well, is it not because we read our bible that we know this? If not, then where on earth would you ever come up with such a thing as a "Holy Spirit" and why would you think he would teach us all things?

1 John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The Word of God without the anointing is legalism. The spirit (what spirit that would be I don't know) without the Word is fanatical spiritual anarchy, and therefore, not of God.

But thank you for posing the question. I'm sure it provoked a lot of thought for people, as well as introspection and self-examination. God bless you.

P.S. I must refute what sunestaurome (above ) said. He claims that the Holy Spirit was given only to the 12 apostles and is not meant for believers since then . He is wrong. I am baptized in the Holy Spirit, as are millions of others - if speaking in tongues, casting out evil spirits, healing the sick, and being filled with the Holy Spirit were only for the apostles of old to carry out, and not for us since, then we have thus hijacked their exclusive right to "Go into all the world and preach the gospel." It's quite easy to spot someone who is not filled with the spirit - they do not rightly divide the word of truth -because they do not have the Holy Spirit within to "teach them all things." Quite frankly, it's just a matter of actually READING the bible and believing every word, instead of picking and choosing that which you can grasp. God's Word is true whether we like it or not, understand it or not, or believe it or not.

The "life of the Spirit" does not tell us or lead us to just quote the Bible, but He also teaches us to study and meditate upon the Word of God. The main thing, is that we cannot even have the Holy Spirut living within us, until we are born again; or we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior. The Holy Spirit can definitely teach us all things, but the main thing which He desires to teach us, is to be obedient unto the Word of God. And if we never read the Bible, the Holy Spirit can hardly teach us anything. For every thing which He teaches us, will always be backed up by the Word of God. And many times; probably most of the time; when the Holy Spirit teaches me the most important things which I need to know, it is when I am studying in the Word of God. The life which the New Testament teaches us to live, from Matthew through Revelations, is to live a life which is pleasing unto God; which begins by accepting Jesus Christ as our personal Savior; and by being obedient unto Him in every way. Then once Jesus is our Savior, we will have the Holy Spirit living within us. But we must also do our part. We cannot expect the Holy Spirit to be able to help us very much, if we are never going to read the Word of God. Yet just because we go around quoting Bible verses, does not mean that we necessarily have Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. For anyone can quote Bible verses, if they know it. To give you a final complete answer, the real way to truly learn to know about God, is to get born again; accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Savior; following the leadership of the Holy Spirit, and studying the Word of God, and making every attempt to live by it. If you want to really know God, then get into the Word of God. For the Word of God is all about God. Don't expect the Holy Spirit to do all the work for you.

The promise of the Spirit to teach and remind all things was made to the apostles, not everyone. We have the Bible to teach us about God and how we should live.

Jn 16:13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own. He will speak only what he hears. And he will tell you what is still going to happen.

I think the better question is why would anyone have a problem with God's word. He revealed it to us in the bible. If anyone thinks he should turn away from it he does not have the Holy Spirit within him. This sounds like nothing more than a ruse, to encourage people to replace God's will with their own.

Anyone can quote the bible. Understanding what is in there as it is written is the key. That is why it has taken me 30yrs to find someone to teach me and me to try to make sense of what I have been taught. Some of it still does not make sense as it is written. Though life and living putting it to the test, you can began to understand and to have faith in God. The mysteries of the bible unfold, as you are made ready to receive the truth. That is to love one another and understand how much we are loved by God..

Interesting. I kinda side with you. I just think people need it or want it as a little reassurance in the back of their mind. I think it's a physical thing to be able to hold the Bible for them, also.

How do you come to recognize the voice of the spirit? By taking into yourself God's word.

Jesus said, "heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words will never pass away". That, my friend, is why I "clutch" them.

If you have a bolt and a nut and want to tighten them why do you use two wrenches instead of only one? Because it requires two wrenches to tighten a bolt and a nut.
