The original sponge came out over 20 years ago, but was pulled off the market.

The sponge is actually just what it says: a sponge. Only this one has spermicide inside of it, which will only be activated when you put the sponge under running water. It will become almost soapy like. You fold the sponge over, which makes it the size to insert into your vagina. You push the sponge up inside of you as far as you can. You may have sexual intercourse as many times as you'd like because you are protected. The only "catch" (for lack of a better word) is that you MUST leave the sponge inside of yourself 24 hours AFTER you've last have intercourse.

Have a lovely rest of the evening.

The contraceptive sponge, marketed in the U.S. under the brand "Today," combines barrier and spermicidal techniques to prevent conception.

The sponges are inserted vaginally prior to intercourse, and must be placed over the cervix to be effective. An elastic band across the sponge is present to facilitate removal.

Effectiveness for prevention of pregnancy when used correctly is about 89% to 91%[1], but can be used in conjunction with a condom making the contraceptive sponge as effective as any other reversible method of contraception. When improperly applied without the use of a condom its effectiveness is somewhere around 84% to 89%. Other sources suggest poorer effectiveness rates as summarised in the table.[2]

Insertion of the sponge requires reaching the cervix, and is generally performed by the woman. Today advertises that intercourse can proceed as soon as the sponge is placed, and up to 24 hours afterward. It has to be left in at least six hours after the final act of intercourse, for a total rated maximum insertion time of 30 hours.

The sponge is just what the name says . It is a vaginal sponge that you insert before sex . It has something in it that kills sperm on contact, and for some reason that it don't, the sperm is kept at a safe distance from the eggs so that you should not get pregnant . Or at least that is what my Mother told me when I asked her that question . Then she laughed at me like it was the funniest thing that she had ever heard .
