*It depends on what you want and the size of bird you want.
Cockatiels talk and are relatively inexpensive..$50.00 and live about 15 years
Keep in mind larger parrots can live a long time...50 years and more.
How serious are you? It's a very big committment!

patience and time
getting a parrot from pirates also imports their language
many old ladies have been shocked ,some probably fataly after hearing what their nice expensive parrot had to say
better teach it yourself
at least you have control over what it says
but they will pick up anyhow things they hear repeated often
so tell your husband to watch his language.
there are many in the forests in the sierra ,where i live.
and a lot of people got Parrots ,and budgies ..the budgies are 50 pesos
and a parrot costs about 200 pesos
in the USA it will be a hundred times more
because they come from illegal animals trafficing
the ones from Africa are evn more expensive
maybe a thousand dollars

How much of a talker do you want? Most all birds of any size will learn a word or two. My tiel as not said a word yet but the conure will say about 6 things and uses them correctly and at the correct times. I got mine for 250 a year and a half ago. But most pet stores will sell them for 600 to 1000. They live about 25 years.
If you want a great talker get a African Gray or a Macaw. But at a pet store you will start out at around 1500 bucks. And they live to be 80 years old. The bird will out live you so make sure it is taken care of after you are gone.

A Timneh African Grey can start out at $500, up to $1,000 (HIGH); a Congo African Grey can range between $800 and $1400 (again HIGH).
You'll get the best prices on high volume breeder networks. This is the one I use:

They're demanding pets and some of them don't even like to talk, but if they do, they're consistently the best. You may be just as happy with a senegal parrot or a pionus, if you look at other bird features. One of my Greys only imitates smoke alarms, whistles and trucks backing up; sometimes he says "Hello."

it all depends on the time you want to spend, teaching them. not all parrots talk, even the more costly ones.you have to work at it. i have a macaw, 2 cockatoos, an African Grey, and 2 Quakers. all talk, and range in price from about 1700 dollars to 150 dollars. the Quakers were the cheapest , and talk alot. you can even teach a cockitiel to talk, and they are only about 50 to 100 dollars. th males are the better talkers among the smaller size, but as you gt into the more costly ones the female and males talk about the same.

You can expect to spend $1500 or more. But possibly less, from a private seller. You do need to be aware of the life span issue. A lot of birds can live 100 years or more. Our oldest daughter has already promised to take our Amazon when that time comes.
