We can't view any picture cd's and cannot burn anything. Every now and then the d drive is gone and when I restart the computer it will then find it.

Check all the cables connecting the CD to the motherboard making sure they are snug. The rest applies only if you are using XP...Go to Device Manager (control panel icon-system icon-hardware tab-device manager button) and check whether it recognizes the CD drive or not. If not it'll have a red exclamation mark next to it and will not display the name of the CD drive. If this is the case you could try re-installing the drivers (right-click the CD icon, select uninstall or update driver) but most likely you'll have to replace it. Additionally, i've seen CD drives not work if daisy chained off the primary hard disk drive, especially on the older IDE type drives so maybe move it to the secondary port but if it's an external USB version then try another port as well. Also, what burning software are you using? Need a bit more detail in your question please.

you're saying you in ordinary words upgraded to XP. are not you about 8 years late? besides examine the BIOS first. next boot off the living house windows CD to ensure if it sees the force. If it does see it then you truthfully are having worry with the ATAPI drivers in living house windows. this would get complicated from the following so inspect the basics first.

Check the Cable connection on the back of the drive (while it is off), it is possible that the drive connection is loose, and thus it will sometimes appear and sometimes not. Also it is possible that the unit itself is failing (it is not a perfect world) and needs to be replaced.
