The answer given by sillyp835 is correct but I would like to add to it.

Colleges and Universities have begun requiring incoming students to show proof they have received the meningococcal vaccine. The reason for this is that dorm life, staying up late at night, not eating properly and going to crowded social activities when you should be catching up on your sleep chips away at your resistance to infections. If you have worn yourself out and you come into contact with a person who is a meningococcal carrier or who has contracted the disease you are a set up to get it too.

Unfortunately, the meningitis develops rapidly and you may become septic or have a systemic reaction to the infection that could kill you. Since several students every year died of meningococcal meningitis, schools now expect you to be vaccinated before you come.
